Prepping kitchen for the day crop June 2024.jpg

On Thursday morning I was up at 4:45AM, got my post up and started getting out all the equipment I would need and setting up the kitchen.

I went out at 6AM and started harvesting the garlic scapes in the Big garden. I did them first because the sun would hit them first. I also did the small amount of weeding as I went along.

Then I moved to the Small garden and started harvesting the sugar pod peas. My brother came out when I was about half done and we decided a cold supper was the thing.

So when I finished the peas, I went and harvested a big bowl of all kinds of greens from the Big garden: basil, Swiss chard, beets, lettuces, Asian greens and mustards, kale, spinach, whatever I could find.

It was 8AM before I was back inside and I needed to sit down so I set up to top and tail the peas while I watched a movie.

Once the peas were done, I washed and put the greens in the fridge to cool.

Of course, I was closely supervised. He’s not at all sure he likes harvest, as both hands are too busy to pat cats.

I got the peas done by 11:45AM and had 1½ hours to rest and get ready to go to an event at the Senior Center for 1PM.

Unfortunately, the speaker mostly went over the same stuff he’d done before. He was supposed to address the bugs found in the garden in June, and he did a very little bit. But at least I got to sit down in a nice cool place for an hour.

When I got home at 2:15PM my brother was leveling the driveway. He’d said he was going to stay inside where it was cool and read. But I guess the tractor held more appeal.

So I got set up to wash scapes and got on with that job.

Once they were washed, we stopped for a quick supper of tuna salad and a huge salad of greens and onions. Then I got busy packing jars.

I got those in the water bath around 6:45PM and they were done by 7PM. There was another large bowl full of chopped scapes for making pesto that went into the fridge for Friday.

I got 6 pints, half of what I was hoping for. There are more scapes to come so I hope I can do another batch.

Kitchen disaster crop June 2024.jpg

The kitchen was a disaster but I was too wiped out to do anything about it. I’ll clean it on Friday morning before I start the pesto.

So that’s how the longest day went for me.

Cleaning the kitchen and making pesto and cleaning the kitchen a second time will be Friday’s activities. It’s to thunderstorm or rain off and on all day and into Saturday.

Wow! Lots of green peas and vegetables. You’ll have plenty of filled jars to keep the troops marching this winter!

The supervisor was working too hard! He deserves a fat bonus!

He says he should get more patting...

The supervising job is so exhausting...

It must be, as he sleeps so much!

It would have been good if everyday was for harvesting one’s plants but it isn’t just possible😅😅
Your plants look healthy though
Love them!

Can you believe we are already canning produce? Glad you got so many peas, mine did nothing at all the mice kept eating the sprouts. I hope you're staying cool in this muggy weather. ♥

That was me last year with the peas. I changed gardens and they didn't find them. The office AC just about keeps up with the humidity...

It was really a very wonderful time that must have been spent at home
