On Thursday he headed out fishing, to a place 30 miles offshore. He checks the forecast to make sure there aren’t going to be rough seas. Thursday looked like a good day.
He actually ended up on a different boat with the same company than was planned. The first boat was pretty full, so he asked if he could go on the second, as the port stern corner where he likes to fish was open.
He caught some haddock, the single cod he was allowed to keep, a pollock and another fish. Those were the keeper fish; there were lots that couldn’t be kept.
On the way in there was a single mate cleaning fish, so he asked if he could help clean fish, so they wouldn’t have to wait for the fish to be cleaned when they made it into dock.
The mates on the boats work hard all day long and have always treated him well. In return he has always left a good tip for them. But as he stood there cleaning other peoples’ fish, he was appalled at the meager tips many people left.
But he had a nice day out on the water and on Friday he didn’t feel as sore and tired as he usually does after a trip.
He had spent Wednesday getting his tree stand up just how he wanted it.
This is the first year he’s used a ladder stand. He had a climber stand before.
The plan is to hunt across our back pasture. Right now there’s a herd of 7 deer out there most days.
He trimmed branches so he’d have a clear shot with the crossbow.
He’d mowed the back pasture a few weeks back so the clover would come back, attracting the deer.
He hasn’t forgotten that the deer disappear the first day of hunting season, and we don’t see them again until the day after it closes, in January….
But one never knows…
If there’s no deer, there’s always pollock season out on the ocean. And we can use all the pollock he can catch. He loves catching pollock!
