Saturday I was up at 6AM and spent a long time editing photos. I finally got the post up around 10AM. My sister is here so there were a lot of chatting breaks.
I got the kitchen cleaned up and we headed out to harvest leeks. I was going to check if there was enough broccoli to bother with. Turns out, there was a lot, enough for supper and the freezer.
The photo above is the 2nd or 3rd round of side shoots.
My helper friend had told me the leeks had done amazing once he took the trailing nasturtiums off them. So they were the main focus.
Once back inside, the first thing was to clean up the broccoli. We had stopped foliar feeding the first of October as we do each year. But the lack of foliar all season until August took its toll.
In addition to the tiger caterpillars and the white cabbage butterfly caterpillars, there were also aphid nests in the crowns of some of it. I’ve not had aphids on broccoli in years. So we had to discard all too much. But we eventually finished and got it soaking.
We got the leeks washed up and ready to chop. We were both weary from all the standing to clean things, so I set up on the kitchen table to finish the leeks. I chopped and she made vacuum sealer bags and packed them.
We ended up with 4 bags with the equivalent of 1 large leek and 2 bags with 2 large leeks, so 6 meals.
We had lunch and she went to run some errands and I sat down to rest for a couple hours.
This was the last harvest of broccoli, ready to blanch. My brother came home just as I was getting ready to do it, and we decided to save out half of it for supper for the 3 of us. We were making pesto chicken, yellow rice and broccoli.
So I got 2 meals for the freezer. I cleaned up the mess and sat down until 5PM when I came out to get supper ready. That finished me off for the day. I was in bed for 8PM.
On Sunday it’s still up in the air whether we go to CT a day early to see my mom or go on Monday. If we don’t go, I have some great looking celery I will harvest and start dehydrating for making celery salt. Otherwise I will do it on Monday.
You are so orderly with your farming and storage and calculations.😁
I'm sure you are having a great time with your sister.
I also like to eat broccoli, you are good at all kinds of farming
#hive #posh
Your freezer will always be filled with food all the time😁😁
Love that!
You’re a good farmer and good food keeper
I like that😁😁
Wow! Those leeks look very healthy! Both leeks and broccoli are my favourite vegetables. But they are quite expensive as they are mostly imported. You’re so lucky to have lots of leeks and broccoli in your garden. The weather here is too hot and humid for them to thrive.
I love those leeks right there. They look very nutritious
They look nice!
