New Start on the Attic – August 1, 2024 @goldenoakfarm

On Thursday by 8AM the humidity was already oppressive. I’d gotten up at 4:45AM and got the post up, then got the kitchen cleaned up. I got set up to feed house plants. My #2 intern arrived at 8AM and we got stuff out of the attic where it was already getting hot.

Once the house plants were fed, we’d be sorting through the book boxes and bags to see what to discard.

By 9AM we had retreated to the cooler office. I had made a list of stuff to get done and one item was to prepare the area by the bookcase for my helper friend to work.

And that meant taking down all the knickknacks and washing/cleaning them. So we carried them out to the hot kitchen and got that job done.

Then we started on the boxes that had been sitting in the office for over a year. Two of them contained collectibles that I wanted to try to sell, so I got photos of them.

Once that was done, we went through the rest of the boxes and dealt with the contents. Then we brought the stuff in my bedroom in to work on.

We worked until noon when she had to leave and my helper friend arrived. When we were setting up for him to work in the morning, I went to change the bag in the vacuum and discovered the filter had given up the ghost.

These are not available any more so I sat down and repaired it. I’d had to glue new foam to the frame I’d cleaned off and had set the frame to dry. I put the vacuum back together when my helper friend arrived and he got busy vacuuming each book in the bookcase. Once a shelf was emptied, he dusted and polished it before returning the books.

It took him 2 hours to do the whole thing. I was sitting and sorting books, and then papers, as he worked. I got all the boxes of books done and he moved the discarded books box back to the stairwell to the attic.

Once everything in the attic is sorted out, the discarded stuff will be taken to one of 2 places that accept that sort of stuff.

Larry obviously didn’t remember my helper friend from 7 months ago and stayed clear of the area until we finished. These boxes are the sorted paper going to recycling. I have a large bag that has to be shredded. We finished at 5PM when he had to go. There were 3 bags left to go through.

On Friday my #2 intern is coming at 7AM and we will get more bags out of the attic before it gets hot. We will work on them until 11AM when she goes. My helper friend will be back at 8:45AM and unfortunately, he will be outside doing the first foliar feeding of the year until he finishes or 11:45AM rolls around. It’s to be another very hot humid day.

Maybe cats have short term memory for Larry not to remember your friend for just seven months

Can you please tell me what a foliar feeding is?

It's liquid food for the plants and is sprayed on the leaves.

We had humidity problem too. The fridge got condensation drops on the door. It did happen once before so I knew the fridge was still working properly.

I still haven’t put my books on the new cabinet. So many books most of which I wouldn’t have the time to read again. Should I get rid of them instead?! But it’s difficult to throw books away.

Your book shelf is very big and strong

My husband built all the bookcases except the ones in the living room.

That's where many of the books in boxes came from, ones I didn't think I'd read again.
