Pantry and Kindling - December 19, 2024 @goldenoakfarm

Help scanning photo crop Dec 2024.jpg

On Thursday as I was answering posts, I needed a photo for a response to
@riverflows’ post about minimalism. So I tried to scan it into the computer. Well, scanning isn’t straight forward like copying. First I had to find the directions I’d saved. Then I had to figure out where the Scan Utility window was. Then I had to set the settings. And finally I could scan the photo. It only took just over an hour. Sigh… But I did it all by myself! Of course, I was supervised.

Once the post was finally up, I started back on the estate stuff and worked on that until 10:30AM. Then I did my PT exercises and got a shower. My helper friend arrived just before noon.

I sent him to get more of the pork chops that we’d done in the crockpot earlier this week. He got something else but we made it work. He prepped them while I made the 10 vacuum bags we’d need. Soon 10 meals were ready for the freezer.

Once the pork was done, we started on the pantry. We were doing the inside of the big white cabinet. I had a big tray and we’d unload each shelf onto it and I’d take it into the kitchen and unload it on the island. Things needing washed were set on the right side of the sink.

Then I’d wash both sides of the doors while he wiped out each shelf, top, and sides. Then we’d load everything back in neatly and start on the next one.

Once the white cabinet was done, we did the remaining shelves on the left of it. I couldn’t face the white cabinet under the marble shelf so we stopped and washed all the things that needed it and put them away.

Bag of kindling in cellar crop August 2024.jpg

Remember when my #2 intern and I cleaned up the remaining kindling outside before the first snow storm? We’d loaded it into one of the big bags, I think 4 loads, and dumped it into a bag in the cellar, to be used over the winter.

But it was all mixed together with bark and hard to find what you needed each day. So my helper friend and I went down, set out 3 more bags and started sorting.

The bag center back was the really full one. On the left is the little stuff I need for the masonry heater. Center front is the kindling, and on the right, the bag of bark. I found it far too boring and so we only did about half of the big bag. But there was a good amount to be going on with sorted.

Eventually I hope to finish the bag and dump what remains over the bank along with the bark. Then I hope to clean up this section of cellar. Future chore…

I was more than finished by then. I heated up some of the minestrone from the freezer for supper and watched movies. That was it for the last day of autumn.

On Friday, the Winter Solstice, I was supposed to go to Tom’s for a Solstice party in the evening, but my #2 intern and her brother both have Covid. So it’s cancelled. Sigh. I’d planned to make @sunscape’s Roasted Corn Chowder with scallops added to bring to the potluck. I’ve asked Tom if he would like it anyways and am waiting to hear if they do. If so, my helper friend and I will make it and take it to them.

If not then we will tackle that small white cabinet in the pantry. He leaves at noon and I have PT in the afternoon. It’s to be snowing by the time I leave for PT so I have to keep the stove going all day. I’ll have the Christmas tree on also.

And so we start the winter season….

Sort:

Keeping the pantry clean is a great job, especially this season.
Well done 👍

Sorry about your intern having COVID, I wish them a quick recovery.

Oooh, tomorrow is the shortest day of the year! My dad used to get excited about that, but as a child, I didn't think it was a big deal. Now I get it! The dark, drab days of winter really get to me now that I am older.

That was how I got my pantry cleaned and well arranged last weekend, I must say, it wasn't easy although.
I love how how you are keeping yours clean too. Kudos.

Wow! You could get on with cleaning up the pantry and sorting out things without being distracted. I have yet to clean all the shelves in my kitchen! There’s so much immediate tasks and backlog of other things to catch up with. I wish I could soldier on steadily everyday so it wouldn’t become a burden or boredom.

Larry is so happy sleeping while you get on with your work. He’s a very homely cat.
More people are catching cold these days. The weather is getting much cooler. Most people take showers in cold water!!

Tom and his wife do polar plunges in a nearby River most days. He has to break the ice with an axe. Brrrrr! Not for me!

Wow! They have very strong determination!

You’re such a neat person
It amazes me the way you clean everything around you
Nice one!

The cleaning only happens in winter. The rest of the year I’m too busy and tired to bother.

I give you lots of credit for staying on top of everything. It's nice having a helper to assist you, especially when it is Larry, ;-) My bottom cupboards could use cleaning and organizing too, but once I get down on the floor, I need help getting back up. lol

Me too! I either get down and stay down until the job is done, or don’t get down at all.

I hear that!

I just wonder how you get to clean your home and do everything by making everywhere clean
It’s a good practice

That pork when cooked must be delicious
