Prepping for the Storm - December 4, 2024 @goldenoakfarm

Comfy kitty

Wednesday I was up at 5AM and got the post up. The bank still hadn’t posted the statements so I couldn’t finish the bills/budget. I was doing okay so I decided to run 3 quick errands: get some money, gas the car, and pick up lottery tickets for the stockings. I left at 7:30AM and I managed it all in 35 minutes.

I sat down for a while when I got home and then went out and did my PT exercises. They seemed a bit hard, I guess I was tired from going out. I went to exercise class, and that was really hard. I was REALLY tired when I got home. So I sat and rested until my #2 intern arrived at 2:30PM for more storm prep.

There’s an Alberta clipper storm headed our way Wednesday night. No telling how much we will get, they are saying 2” – 5”.

I hadn’t been able to get my son to finish the last of the wood pile so my #2 intern and I started on it. Fortunately, nothing was really frozen down. We got the tarp folded, the wood in the shed, and loaded the small stuff into the huge bags and dragged them into the cellar where we dumped them into the storage bag. It took 3 trips to get it all cleaned up.

Then we took 3 totes around to the steps and loaded the pumpkins and squash into them. That way they would be easily moved and not buried in snow. My homesteading friend is supposed to pick them up after the storm on Thursday.

Once we’d finished all that, we sat and visited a while until the contractor arrived. He’d been up to the Christmas tree farm to see if he could find a big enough tree for his house. But for some reason, trees around here aren’t grown tall much anymore, so no tree.

I had hoped we’d be finishing this job on Wednesday, but he’d forgotten about replacing the board. So we decided to just peg the holes of boards we were not going to mess with.

We were really successful in matching most of the pegs with the grain. There’s one between the 2 screws in the bottom photo, on the other side of the bottom line. He’d found a finish that just matches the bamboo so we were quite pleased with the job, as far as it went.

He had waited as long as he dared for the boards on the porch to dry out. With the storm coming, it was time to tape them against further water damage. He will repair them in the spring.

My son got the wood in the house and we were finally ready for the storm. I was really exhausted but never headed to bed until 9PM.

On Thursday, I’ll have steps to sweep. My son will do the walkways. And if we get 5” Tom will come over and plow for me. My helper friend arrives at noon. The storm is supposed to stop by 9AM and the day will be cloudy and cold. I finally got the statements, so I will finish the bills/budget in the morning. The kitchen needs cleaned up and I have PT exercises to do. I also need to finish the Christmas shopping and write Christmas cards. I’ll probably have my helper friend make a big meal to freeze, but I haven’t figured out what yet.

Sort:

Is worth preparing for because storms can be disastrous both to humans and properties.

Such a cozy kitty scene!😊

I'm super curious how much snow you got? It's cold enough to snow here, and grey enough, but the ground is lacking white, which I don't like, there should be snow everywhere here this time of year!

Hope all is well and you and the kitters are enjoying a pleasant evening!

Just under 5”…

I hope you don't get too much snow from that clipper headed your way.

  • only just under 5” and some has already melted.

That’s a lot of work but it’s cool to see your son get involved in this as well
Nice!

You are very busy, be careful and stay away from the storm.

Boards look OK now, I couldn't see any hole, good job

I hope you eventually freeze enough meat that will last long

We are making 2 meals right now. Hopefully they will be at least 5 meals in the freezer.
