Have you heard about the three sisters aka Companion growing? We gave this a try in the organic garden I work in. Part of it is shading the soil for the benefit of the other two.

Yes, most definitely. We love the concept of intercropping and do it in many ways. Our corn is doing best of all in the 3 sisters plants this year. Many of the squash died from fungi and the beans are being eaten by Japanese beetles, but the corn is over 8' high and started to develop heads.
