Time to transfer water back to the header tank

Winter has finally come to an end and the danger of pipes freezing is over. Along about December before the first freeze, I empty the header tank and drain the lines for the winter. In Spring, the first step is to reattach the pipe to the transfer pump and check for leaks.

Water is gravity fed from our 1500 gallon water tank to the transfer pump.

The transfer pump will pump water at a rate of 23 gallons per minute. So it does not take long to fill the 20 gallon header tank. I chose a small header tank because I did not want more weight on the roof than necessary.

It is nice having running water back in the house, but after three months without it, we kind of got used to carrying water from the well into the house. We still do not have hot running water (we probably never will), but this summer we will be able to take cold showers.

Have a great day! Every comment is up-voted and thanks for your up-vote, Tim and Joann

Very clever, how that works! Running water without electricity! Ill have to show the hubby. :)

I'm glad you did this post. I noticed your header tank some time ago in a post by @mericanhomestead, and you have helped me to visualize the whole system. What do you do about hot water, if anything?

We heat water on the kitchen stove for most of the year and the wood heater during the winter.

We don't have hot running water either. It is amazing what you get used to.

Nice setup Tim, about how long would you say it takes to fill the tank?

It takes a minute or two.
