I hate taxes - well at least unjust taxation.
Our AG (Agriculture) exemption has been removed by our county tax assessor. It has become a financial hardship for us as now we're expected to not only pay additional taxes, but possibly retro taxes going back 5 years. And if not paid within 30 days a lien could be placed upon on property. GEEEZE!
Until now our beautiful area of the Texas Hill Country has pretty much escaped the reach of over jealous governmental bureaucratic money grabbing minions. Did I already say I HATE UNJUST TAXES?
But, we're not the only ones facing this hardship. Several of our neighbors are in the same situation. After some strategy meetings we're now looking to form a Wildlife Association which could qualify us for a different kind of exemption. There's wildlife management plans to develop and of course government approved forms to complete. We're hoping for the approval and to have this tax burden removed.
Where do we even begin?
Tis the Season - for Deer Corn
When you own small acreage it can be hard to draw deer onto your property. When you're working with several properties you need to plan together to draw those deer in and keep them in the area. You need three basic components for a healthy herd. Feed, Water, Coverage. A good acorn crop this year has helped and we're adding deer feeders. We're fortunate to have a creek and ponds close. We're keeping some of our land in heavy undergrowth to provide cover for the deer. So all three areas are checked.
Next on our list is tracking and documenting our efforts. Game cameras are now installed and David will be developing a spreadsheet to track progress. While the Wildlife exemption adds value and will save us tax dollars it is a distraction from our primary focus of homesteading. This change serves as an example; even when you research and carefully select your homestead location there are bureaucratic agencies that can reach out to negatively impact you. You need to try and set aside some money for the unexpected. We're now scrambling to save up for the unexpected. The unexpected will come.
Freedom must be exercised.
Happy Homesteading
