Young Food Forest Tour and TIPS To Start Your Own!

in #homesteading5 years ago

We are 18 months into our project! Take a tour of our young food forest as it wakes up from its winter slumber. Listen to some tips to help you get on your way with starting your own!!

When we started this project just around 18 months ago there was not one garden, not one fruit tree...in fact the ONLY thing in this back yard space was grass/weeds, and that one magnolia tree. We built the coop/chicken yard, the small wood shed, put in the woodchips, planted the fruit trees, gardens, herbs, etc. We still have a long way to go but it's a beautiful work in progress!

With lots of love

What are the types of serviceberries? I just planted a Allegheny.

Do you have deer? Any problems with them pruning the little trees?

You have done a beautiful job of building your forests! Amazing transformation!

We have Saskatoon, Allegheny, and Apple. :) We do have deer. They have not been an issue. Thank you for the compliment! I'll do another video once everything wakes up so you can see it when it is full. :) Plus at that time is when we plant out the orchard floor with all sorts of goodies. It's going to be so full this year. I've already begun planting. :)

In a way I envy you the long growing season you have. But then, I most certainly do not envy you the upper 80's temps in April! :))

You may have said where you got all your trees and shrubs, but I don't recall. Please can you tell us again?

In the beginning, I didn't have any specific place...I'd pick up trees locally at local farms, swap/barter/trade, I'd get clippings to root, etc. purchased a few online from Fast Growing Trees or Starks Bro, but now I have a nursery license (we are now officially a state-certified nursery) and so I buy from a private wholesale certified natural greenhouse that I've worked a deal out with. I sell plants, trees, seeds, etc here at our homestead from wholesale purchases and from our own starting (rooted clippings, seed, etc).

Ahhhh, ok. Cool you can sell now. :))
