Isn’t It Supposed To Be Spring On The Homestead?

Hello everyone! I hope you all had a great Easter and a relaxing holiday weekend. After hearing the weather forecast last night and looking outside today, I was saying to myself “I thought it was supposed to be Spring?” Yesterday, it was fairly nice and normal for our Springs. There was some on and off rain and it was in the mid-40s which is it what it typically is like. Then when I awoke and took a look outside here is what I saw.

Yep, you guess it snow. Somewhere in the range of 3-5 inches, but that is okay because tomorrow we are supposed to get in the upper 60s for a day. We have been mainly dealing with several inches of rain and it has made the ground extremely saturated for the last couple of weeks with no end to the rain in the near future. We like to get our potatoes and onion sets out around Good Friday every year, but, because of how saturated the ground is and not getting a chance for the ground to dry out, they will have to go out much later.

Since the weather has not cooperated outside, I have still been working on getting my seed starts growing and doing well. The only new thing that I have gotten in the ground since my last update were a few more onions and some watermelon radishes. So far all the seeds are doing very well. I still have to get some broccoli and cauliflower started, but for the most part a majority of the planting is done.

The next step this week is to get my plants in bigger pots/containers, so that they do not get root bound. This is an issue that I think has caused problems in the past, by ultimately stunting the plants growth potential. Knowing that I will be transplanting soon, I am trying to get together a good compost to really get the plants to take off. I have heard about things like alfalfa meal, but never tried it before and was thinking about incorporating that in the compost. Usually, we use things like our rabbit manure. What do you all like to use?

I am know that I have not been posting as much lately, but with the weather slowly getting better, I am hoping to get more put up on steemit. Thanks for reading and stopping by!

Thank you for your continued support of SteemSilverGold

Winter is sure dragging on for us as well. Spring is coming soon though, I can feel it in my bones. I've never heard of watermelon radishes. I will have to check them out.

I use everything I can for compost, I think variety is good for the soil and we need a lot of amendments to help us with our clay soil. I am going to try vermicomposing this year I've been reading a lot about how good worm castings are for the soil.

OMGosh! is it ever! I am done with winter... really, I am.

I sure hope your right that Spring is coming soon. I heard of the watermelon radishes a year or two ago, but have yet to try them. Last year, cabbage worms ate the several I had planted, but they will not get them this year.

I have heard of the vermicomposting and how it can make "black gold" for plants to grow in, but I have not taken the dive into getting that going. Maybe I can get it started this summer. Thanks

It always feels good when it gets warm for a day and all the snow melts and the ground thaws. It only gets warmer from here! @ironshield

Yes, it does! Now if I can get the ground to dry a little :)

Thanks for stopping by @ironshield.

From your mouth to my ears.. but yeah... we're expecting snow this week and weekend again! UGH!!! Spring save us please!

Same here with the snow. Today we are suppose to get some real bad storms and wind, which normally we can handle, but I think one of our heifers is going to be giving birth soon. So I wouldn't get upset if it got 60 degrees and lots of sunshine for a couple of days.

Even here in the midwest US Spring is not arriving! Just had a snow last night that melted this morning!! Now its thunder storming, with a predicted high of 70F tomorrow, and then back down into freezing temperatures the next day. Wow, what a ride! Sure looks pretty up there though!!

Only in the Midwest can we get weather like this!!

Thanks. That was a picture of our woods and field, now it looks like we have several large ponds from all the rain.

The groundhog needs to be shot! Lol

Haha! I liked that. I am definitely not putting much faith in him next year :)
