This is a great example of heritage breed livestock vs commercial. We have some boer goats that need to be hoofed every 4 weeks or so and also would need lots of wormers and vaccinations but I was able to breed that out of them with a nice kiko herd sire. The kiko goats are much more resistant to parasites and we might hoof him once every 6 months. They are closer to the wild goat genetics which makes the very tolerant. Just having the genetics breed into my herd has straitened out most of the issues where we don't need any of the commercial standard care anymore. Same with our hogs. The heritage breeds have done much better on pasture and a feed stock of mostly clean no GMO corn and peanut hay where as the commercial hogs that are known for growing bigger and faster have not done very well and lag behind our heritage breeds. I am sure they would do fantastic in concrete stalls being feed 20 lbs of hormone injected grain every day but not so good on a more natural feed stock. Great article on why the best maybe not be the best for your situation. Thanks again for another great article.
