My chickens got lose today. I learned a long time ago there aint no use in chasing them around all day. They know where the coup is, they'll come home at dark. The wound looks bad, but the dogs teeth didn't get through to her insides. I don't know whether or not to butcher her or wait it out. I think she'll recover if the dogs will stay away. Hopefully my dog will catch them next time. I'm just glad I heard it happen and was able to get her back before they killed her. If any body's going to eat her it's going to be me!
I know the feeling. I let my chickens free range so I lose a chicken per month.
I've had free range chickens and ducks in the past with no loss, until I got hogs. The ate almost all of them.
Lol I didn't see that anwer coming!
The birds didn't see it coming either.
Oh ouch, poor chickie!
She seems to doing fine. I believe if shes good by tomorrow afternoon she'll get better.
I have a similar looking one from my own dog who got one of our chicks. I'm certain she broke its leg, but it seems to be eating drinking and doing ok.
The most interesting thing was that this other hen stayed with her on the porch. She knew she was hurt and hung right with her , I guess to make sure she stayed safe. She never left her side until I caught them and put them back in the coup.
Looks like neighborhood dogs are bothering everybody's livestock! Why don't people keep their dogs on their own property... Makes me angry just thinking about it.
In any case, one of our chickens just had a chunk ripped out of her backside (by a rather large and overly-amorous duck). She recovered just fine. But you never know with those chickens - some have the fight in them to survive, and others don't.
I can't get mad a about it. We rent a little mobile home in a small neighborhood. Our land lord runs a garage next door. It's his dad's dog. He lives on the other side of the garage. They have two dogs that are like the neighborhood dogs and they've lived here your years. I just have to take my lumps and make sure the chickens don't get lose again. I just went over there and took her back. Dead or alive there was no way I was letting them enjoy that meal!
My chicken that was taken by attacked by a possum has healed up nicely. It looked as rough or worse than this one. Just keep an eye on her and make sure she eats and drinks, she'll be okay.
Another one one yours got attacked?
I love your attitude! I too would prefer being the one to eat my chicken as opposed to a dog, if I had to... I think that the chickens feathers may not grow back, but I'm not sure about that! Best of luck with the neighbors dogs!
I think they'll grow back. Rosters will pull hens feathers out like that too. I've seen some that looked awful because roosters abusing them.
Shot that dog, complaint the police as well
