The Carolina Farm Stewardship Association is an organization that promotes some pretty cool things that we have learned about in sustainable agriculture. Apart from being an insightful event it sounds like a great networking and enjoyable conference to attend. They support work that helps farmers, the workers, and the land. Their mission statement is, “We help people in the Carolinas grow and eat local, organic food by advocating for fair farm and food policies, building the systems that organic family farms need to thrive, and educating communities about local, organic farming (CarolinaFarmStewards.Org 2018)”. This is an excellent mission for an organization regardless if your a farmer or not. These are the initiatives we need people to get behind to get good nutritious food to our region. The sustainable Agriculture conference ironically got brought up this weekend by some friends of mine that are in agriculture in south carolina who happened to be visiting for the weekend. They had been before and told me it was a great event excited to hear about it i asked the date and it was this weekend, hope you enjoyed your time! Conference activities included: “Over 60 workshops on timely topics Bus tours visiting dynamic farms, Intensive pre-conference sessions, Keynote presentation by Ricardo Salvador, Exhibit hall highlighting products & services for small farms, Amazing local and organic meals, Regional gatherings and networking opportunities, Policy updates and advocacy opportunities, Seed exchange, book signing, & much more! (CarolinaFarmStewards.Org 2018)”. After looking through the activities list it's easy to see why so many enjoy themselves, I for one plan on attending next year. It’s difficult to decide as I'm writing this what all I would want to do, I feel I could have two different mindsets to going here, a business minded one focuses on networking, learning, and becoming better at farming. The other could be just a relaxed one to have fun and enjoy myself. Both seem doable and that's cool to have events like that. For Session A I would have attended the growing and marketing medicinal herbs, since I know a modest amount and can now make tinctures, I am more interested in this! Session B would have continued from A but If i could would have gone to the designing a sustainable diet using biointensive farming, sounded pretty cool. For session C I would go to the NC farmlink, looking for land now haha. Session D, Cash Crop. For Session E I would go to can you really grow truffles in carolinas. For session F Growing and selling unusual crops.
