Here are one of the bags of black walnuts i collected off the side of the road. Actually i had been driving down one of the main roads to town and would dodge these. Yesterday my son and decided to stop and see. I realized they were black walnuts. We are from washington state so we had no clue. So the two of us not wanting to miss the chance at a free score begain filling our shirts and dumping them in on the floor of the suburban.
Knowing we didn't have much time since we had to go pick up the wife from work we hustled to get as many as we could. I'll go get the rest today.
So this is me separating the husk from the hull that holds the nut.
You can see that they are really easy to brake apart. There wet kind of mushy. Some do have little worms in there. (Dont worry there small wont eat much lol) No really they only eat the husk and dont bother the nut.
Here is a little closer look at the hull coming from the husk.
Now a closer look at them without husk.
Now after i do all that i give them a good wash and put in a old potato bag that has a bunch of hole. They need good air flow to help dry without molding.
Oh crap i should mentioned first wear gloves lol.
Yes you may have herd the hull from the black walnut can be boiled down and used for dyes. Iam going to try this to stain some pallet projects i have. Well this is just something were doing on the homestead and wanted to share. Thank for checking out.
Black walnuts are absolutely worth the effort. Especially once you get the hand of cracking them open! Nothing else tastes like black walnuts. The English walnuts in the store aren't even close. Like @coffeetime said, driving over them is such a traditional, and fun, way to get those hulls off. I've also played a lot of "scuff a nut" with heavy workboots! Enjoy all your tasty treasure! :D
If you wouldn't have told me before that those are walnuts - I could have sworn that those are some kind of magic fruit.
Lol to some people think they are magical they are super good.
We had black walnut trees on our farm in Wisconsin. We would collect buckets of them and spread them on the driveway. The cars and trucks would break the hulls. We would later pick them up and lay them out on the floor of the back porch to let them air dry.

I have processed so many black walnuts that way -- and my parents, and their parents. It is such a traditional way to get those hulls off. And lots of fun for everyone. I have such happy memories as a kid doing that with my granddad in his driveway that sloped so steeply. There was always so much commotion and clutch work, lol. And all the neighbors were doing the same thing.

For the first time I see black walnuts! I am surprised. We have ordinary walnuts, but they are solid inside and look differently.

Oh boy, black walnuts! We got a bunch from Craigslist for FREE ....but we didn't know what we were getting into. It was quite labor intensive to scrub the black mess off and then to pry out those insides. The funny part was that we left overnight and all the dried nuts in hulls we cleaned off, a squirrel made off with

Yeah iam finding it tough also. And dang squirrels better leave my nuts alone lol.
Are they edible by humans?
Yes let them cure and crack them and eat. They are really good.

I had no idea that you could eat the wild black walnuts! I've been tripping on them and dissecting them to check out their insides. I love black walnuts. Though they are a bit messy and time consuming to process, they're well worth it!! Great for baking and snacking. Glad you had the opportunity to get these. Fun post. :)

These trees are everywhere where I used to live. People hate them. Now that you have a bag of stinky peeled nuts what are you going to do with them? Have you tried breaking one open yet? If so how do they taste?
We plan on curing and eating lol. I love walnuts i just never harvested them before. Thanks for the comment.
