OK, in all honestly we happened into growing sweet potatoes by accident. Two years ago, a piece of a spud thrown into the compost bin starting growing a 10' vine by mid-summer. When we pulled it up, a large sweet potato had grown under the vine!
Since that was pretty cool, we decided to go for it in 2017 with a dedicated grow bed. We built a micro 4'x8' bed with 2"x8" planks and concrete block. Filled with pretty much anything we had on hand...sandy loam, sand, hay, and black mulch.
We also started extremely late in the growing season for this activity. We didn't even start slips until April. Let them grow thru May, and then planted the slips in June. With that in mind, we waited SUPER late to harvest...last minute actually on December 5th, with our first freeze to occur that night.
The results exceeded our expectations, and we set a goal for 300# for 2018

Thats's an awesome idea @silini !!! Thank you! I appreciate your comments...matter of fact, I DO have some excellent information to share on the soil types and a 2nd test bed "control group" we grew that did fail...much learned. Post on that to follow ASAP!
