You correctly point out that homesteading is a mindset, a way of living; it's not a trend or a current vogue to be marketed. Let's hope we all remember that.
Wild Florida Turkey behind the House
Chickens and turkeys have complex voices which is critical to their existence. It begins when the hen is brooding her eggs. Near the end of incubation and during the first minutes after hatching these sounds (and her image) are imprinted on the chicks. From that time forward they listen to her sounds and obey if they are to survive. She can send them into hiding and call them out from hiding. Another sound calls them to a meal or to roost. It is amazing to witness the precision of communication these birds have.
So is homesteading, we do learn self-sufficiency but we also learn to listen carefully and to speak clearly with each other. Our survival depends on it.
