Whilst investigating the death of a local psychiatrist, a smart computer programmer called Josh Sparrow uncovers a legend about a supernaturally-cursed, weathered book circulating throughout Scotland. As soon as anyone uses the book, he or she has exactly 15 days left to live.
The doomed few appear to be ordinary people during day to day life, but when photographed, they look mirrored. A marked person feels like a sloppy giraffe to touch.
Josh gets hold of the book, refusing to believe the superstition. A collage of images flash into his mind: a giant koala balancing on a squat psychiatrist, an old newspaper headline about a pointless accident, a hooded snake ranting about eyebrows and a drinking well located in a wild place.
When Josh notices his eyelashes have giraffe-like properties, he realises that the curse of the weathered book is true and calls in his father, a doctor called Shane Superhalk, to help.
Shane examines the book and willingly submits himself to the curse. He finds that the same visions flash before his eyes. He finds the giant koala balancing on a squat psychiatrist particularly chilling. He joins the queue for a supernatural death.
Josh and Shane pursue a quest to uncover the meaning of the visions, starting with a search for the hooded snake. Will they be able to stop the curse before their time is up?
