I can only describe the weather and ‘dank’. It’s wet, muddy, cold and feels likes it is constantly dark! But horses still need feeding, mucking out, turning out, grooming, riding......... and the list goes on.
One of the top priorities is the care of the horses foot. There is a well know saying “No foot No horse”. When I first tell students this they quite often give me somewhat of a puzzled look, but once I explain that one of the best ways to keep your horse fit and sound is to make sure your daily hoof care is top notch they understand. Picking hooves out a good 3 times a day is a must. Weekly scrubbing is these ‘dank’ conditions will prevent all sorts of problems, such as abscess and bacterial infections of the frog. Both of which can be crippling for the poor horse. In the picture is our carrier who comes weekly to trim and shoe the horses and help maintain healthy feet.
So this is why it is virtually impossible for me to have the lovely smooth hands with manicured nails that so many of my friends have. But the horses on the other hand have beautiful, immaculately clean hooves.
