A while ago a wrote an article about the beauty and variety of the orchid. I was struck by the fact that I had been given Orchids as gifts a number of times and I must say that they all died very soon. Like a bonsai, Orchids need special attention. I made it my mission to correct my ignorance.

Enthusiasts grow them for their remarkable elegance and fascination. They have been a symbol of love and beauty. We actually find Orchid Councils in various countries. Tinus Oberholzer gives us the how to care for Orchids.

When choosing which orchid to buy, never buy one that's not in bloom. Seedlings may take up to 5 years to bloom! We do perceive them to take care of them and as I stated that they die easily.

Yet there are so many people who have successful growth on patios, in homes and even in gardens. So what's the trick? We
need to know that the orchid family is at the top of flowering plants in the world. There are more than 25000 species and about 115000 man - made hybrids. Each needing slightly different conditions to grow beautifully.

Here it comes. The trick is to be acquainted with the type of orchid you have. Knowing it's name,
you can do your own research or ask an experienced grower to help you. As with garden plants, if the conditions are right you will have much better success.

These factors should be kept in mind. Temperature range, the maximum and minimum temperatures that the plant can endure. Moth orchids, for example can not handle temperatures below 12 degrees C, while boat orchids can grow well in your garden and can even grow in light frost!

Light requirements : Some species like 2 to 3 hours of direct morning sun and cannot grow and flower in low light conditions. Phalaenopsis leaves will burn in direct sun.

Water requirements : Most orchids like a free - draining potting mix and must be slightly dried out, before being watered again. When watering, make sure that the potting mix and roots are properly wet.

Potting, when the plant outgrows its pot or the potting substance breaks down, it's time to repot. The best time for repotting is just after flowering when the new roots start developing. Good draining is very important. Don't use pots that are too big.

Just for interest sake: Some
orchids are so powerfully scented as to perfume an entire greenhouse or living room. Some orchids fragrances mimic aromas such as raspberry, coconut, citrus and lilacs. Pretty impressive.
