You may recall the house I'm renting has two unfinished rooms. They make great projects space, but so does the basement, and if I can finish the rooms enough for human habitation...I can take on another roommate. That would dramatically reduce my rent.
As you can see above, we first laid down the insulating foam. It came for free with the rolls of carpet and just happened to perfectly fit with remarkably little cutting. The carpet didn't, and a great deal of grunting and sweating with a box knife was required.
The lower room as finished as it will get today. Can't tack the carpet down to concrete so an area rug may be what I use to weigh down the kinks. All in all I think it looks acceptable given the constraints @amandarichards and I worked under.
Here's the other unfinished room with foam laid down. It made for a neater fit. The carpeting isn't quiet perfect yet but there will be ample opportunity for fine tuning the fit in the coming days:
I think this one just needs a long, thin isosceles triangle cut out of it as the far end is wider than the near end by like an inch. It's really getting there however. I can't seem to rent the finished rooms for more than $500 apiece, so living in these two back areas for $600 won't be too bad of a deal.
I can probably also talk the other two roommates into doing most of the chores on account of the difference in rent. I do have more living space than they do, but it's also rougher and less attractive. @amandarichards says it will make a rad 'lair' when furnished, with some sheets tacked to the walls to cover the plywood or something along those lines.
Anyway that's all for now, further updates as they're warranted.
Stay Cozy!
You are quiet handy. You did great with the underlayment. I hope you get your roommates in as soon as possible and I hope you get along together. Sometimes it could be a nightmare.
fun jobs, sometimes we have to do things like this ourselves to save money. otherwise it can channel the hobby. carpet installation is easy but requires thoroughness and tidiness. hopefully the results are good and neat.
good luck bro
Yes absolutely if you have some extra space you should definitely take in a housemate or roommate, whatever ?
Your will save some extra money by doing that. The design on the walls is fabulous, I like it.
But that's just bare plywood.
Oh really ?
But we get simple ones here.
Good.... good!
I suggest using "welcome to my evil lair..." as your go-to door greeting.
How much is that room going for?
It's two rooms, and I rent it for myself for $600/mo.
Such an interesting post alex, keep it up.Waiting for the next one.
You almost made something out of nothing. You changed that little place for renting to two person. The way you made it looks you are a good interior designer. You have got sharp mind about that.Thank's for the post.
Sharing with another mate can save you a penny, why is the foam free of cost?
A guy was throwing it out and advertised it on Craigslist for anybody to come pick up.
You have changed the tukoo space for renting two people. Your good internal designer is how you made beautiful and carefully. You can use concrete on the floor, thanks for your post,
wow, you are so great building a house underground cost a lot, @alexbeyman your thinking is perfect.
You can still use the tack strips in the basement if you want. You just need to use the proper nails to fasten them to the concrete. Or, you can but carpet squares. If you have an Ikea around though you might be able to find some cheap imitation wood flooring that looks pretty cool.
I remember you suggesting those things last time. I appreciate it but do not have permission to do those things from the landlord.
It is amazing to be building a house. I wish it well done.
I am not building a house.
It is simply amazin @alexbeyman ...u did great with the concrete flooring
Great work :) You seem to be turning that into a nice habitable space. Did you think about isolation?
I've made some brico today as well... Didn't took photos because I was afraid of just making a mess, but it went well.
Yes, I think about isolation frequently.
Just keep in mind.. roommates can be a freaking pain in the arse! Do a thorough interview with multiple choices if you may.. but chose wisely! :D
I don't have the luxury of time. I can only afford this place for one more month before I have to move out if I don't have two roomies in by then. I had several grand saved up as backup money but then taxes were due, and I owed all of it to the government.
That sux man.. hope we get out of the bear market soon and you get back on track! You'll find roommates.. just hope they are decent. I've had horrible experiences.
When two brains meet this is what they produce... It would be like benefitting 500$ rather than paying 100$. Anyways is the rent for month or year?
Month
I'm glad its coming out nicely and the rent is almost settled. I love the walls.
Why? They are just bare plywood right now.
They look good on camera.
It looks like there is a corpse under the carpet. Every respectable ghost house needs a corpse under the carpet lol.
It's not bad, waiting for the rest of the photos.
I remember this comment from the last article about this project.
Dafaq?? Rly, where, when, how. No way. Deja Vu!
You are so great, you can even build houses.
You can almost do anything, so much wow.
I am not building a house. This house was already here. I am renting it and making two of the rooms nicer so I can live in them.
I knowww. Even though you're not building one right now it doesn't mean you can't build them at all, lol.
