HOW TO FIX DAMAGE EARPHONES AND SAVE COST OF GETTING A NEW ONE | DIY

in #how-to7 years ago

Hello steemians, today we are going to be doing a simple DIY tutorial on how to fix damaged earphones. For music lovers like me, earphones are like the basic accessory we cannot do without, thus the daily usage of earphones poses the risk of possible damage to it.

A lot of people feel that when their earphones gets damaged, it can’t be useful again so they trash it and visit the nearest gadget shop to purchase a new one. So this tutorial on how to fix damaged earphones will teach you how to bring that dead earphone back to life! But first, let’s see a simple breakdown of how earphones operates.

Basic operations of earphones

The basic operations of Earphones are not much different from that of a regular speakers that operates by converting electrical signals to sound waves with an electromagnet coupled with a cone made of paper or other material to enable it vibrate the air which leads to the creations sound waves.

The signal source which is your mobile phone or music player sends signals in the form of an electrical current, through a cable to the drivers which is the miniature speakers in the headphones.

A magnetic field is then generated by sending this signal through the voice coil in the driver. A fixed magnet is used to surround the voice coil and the electrical current in the voice coil attracts and repels it from the magnet.

The voice coil is attached to the driver's cone via a suspension material, and it oscillates to and fro between 20 to 20,000 times per second, changing the air pressure in front of it and creating sound waves synchronously with the signal received.

So this is the basic operation of earphones, let’s now proceed to the various steps in fixing a damage earphone.

Tools required

It is a simple DIY that doesn't require too many tools, the recommended tools are; a razor blade, a glue and soldering iron.

Step 1:

separate the wires completely, so you have the plug and the two separate speakers.

Step 2:

peel off a small part of the insulating wire at the end of all three wires so you can clearly see the conductors in them

Step 3:

After peeling off the insulator, you will notice the earphone’s speaker have just two connecting wires, while the earphone’s plug have three, this usually done for those who will be using their earphones on either mono or stereo mode.
The speakers usually consist of similar colors so connect them uniformly.

Step 4:

Now it’s time to connect all wires together, to do so, connect the common wire (gold) of the speaker and plug together, Connect other wires together, For more details see video at the end of the post.

Step 5:

After connecting all three wires together, if you decide to try using it that way, you will eventually notice it won’t work, this is simple because there are threadlike insulators between the connection thus resisting the flow of signals. So it’s now time to make use of our soldering iron or any other heat source to melt or burn those threadlike insulators.

After doing that you can test if the earphones are working if yes you can now proceed to applying glue on the connection for a stronger bond.
