How to Get Started with Zumba

Whether you are new to fitness or you are just interested in spicing up your normal exercise routine a bit, Zumba is a great place to start! Whether you join a local Zumba class or you just use a Zumba DVD at home, Zumba is what you make it.

Once you have decided that you want to give it a try, you face the most difficult dilemma, “How do I get started?” Have no fear, this article is here to help! Here are a few steps to getting started:   

1. Decide where to practice  Do you want to practice alone or with a group or friends or even with a group of potential new friends from a Zumba class at your local gym? Deciding where you want to practice is important because there are numerous options to choose from.    

2. Decide what kind of Zumba to practice Once you have decided where to practice, now you have to decide what kind of Zumba you want to practice. Since Zumba’s creation, it has continued grow in popularity and people create new twists, routines, styles, and even focuses.  

You have choices like Zumba Fitness which is a great place for beginners who are just getting started to learn the basics, or Zumba Circuit which focuses on using circuit training and Zumba together. There are even things like Zumba for Kids which means that you can make Zumba fun for the whole family! Decide what you hope to get out of Zumba and that will help you to decide which kind is best for you.    

3. Decide not to care Zumba is about getting a killer workout and you may look crazy while you do it because let’s face it, not everyone can be a world class dancer. But that’s ok, you aren’t competing on Dancing with the Stars, you are just trying to work out and have an awesome time doing it!  

Before you get started, make up your mind not to worry about what others think. Go out there and have the time of your life! Let loose and dance like no one is watching. In order to truly reap the benefits of Zumba, you can’t let your fear prevent you from giving it all you’ve got.    

4. Zumba Finally, after you have decided where to practice, what kind of Zumba to practice, and that you aren’t going to let the fear of looking silly get in your way, you have one final thing to do. Dance! When you are ready, put on some comfortable pants, lace up your Zumba shoes or head over to your local class and get ready to dance until you can’t dance anymore!   

Zumba is truly an amazing full body work out that gets your heart rate up, sweat dripping and calories burning. Once you get out there and start moving to the music, you will forget it’s even a workout and just have a good time. Zumba really is a great activity to do with a group of friends because it is just so much fun! Now stop wasting time and get up and Zumba!

I just took my FIRST Zumba class tonite. I was wearing the wrong shoes, so I went barefoot. It was a BLAST.
