I get animals dropped off on my doorstep constantly. A couple of years ago two three day old kittens were taken from their mother and abandoned. They ended up on my porch. I am the go to rescue in the area. Everyone knows that even when my home is full of abused and neglected pets- even when my No Vacancy sign is up- I still will never turn anyone away.

These two little black and white kits were dehydrated and near death. Their bellies were distended meaning they were full of poo. A not well known fact is that infant kittens must be stimulated in order to urinate and defecate. So even though they had not eaten for 8 hours it appeared, they were near death from the toxins and being full and needing to go.

This was the emergent need, so I got a warm, wet washcloth and gently massaged their genital areas. It had been some time since this had been done so there was quite a lot that came out. Naturally, this is the mothers job, she will use her tongue to get the job done. Later I restocked some chemical free baby wipes- they are perfect for rescuing infant pets.
Kittens must be stimulated to eliminate after each bottle feeding. I also do it after they wake up from their naps. They should pee after every bottle, and only poop a few times a day which lessens as they get older.
Be careful with your pressure, they do not need much- think mama cat’s tongue. And be sure to dry the area, I use a soft tissue or cotton balls and blot. Baby kittens are as sensitive as human infants- remember they are brand new to the Earth!

Yes, most (if not all) infant mammals need to be stimulated to pee and poo. Puppies, squirrels, raccoons... NO question is a dumb question when you're asking about health!

This is so important to know about the distended bellies as a sign that baby needs help going to the bathroom. Sweet kitties. I need to make sure my mother-in-law knows.
Now they get what I call "Buddha bellies" when they are full of milk. You will be able to tell the difference after caring for them. But- when in doubt, try gentle massage in case the baby needs to go. I know what it feels like after a long car trip and I need to go- not pleasant! lol

Thank you for this post! Last year I rescued a sick kitten from behind my shop. I didn't know about stimulating him to go to the toilet, but he was affectionate and I had him with me a lot so I think that was enough stimulation. The only thing I noticed was that he didn't poop until he had been with me for over 3 weeks, which I was curious (and concerned) about. Eventually he grew to be a healthy, happy cat. (And then broke my heart by dying of an undetermined accident 7 months later.)
That is concerning, and I am honestly surprised he made it without pooing! Poor guy :( Both of you. Hugs <3
He was very skinny and very sick. He had cat flu and it damaged one eye so he was half blind but he turned out to be the most awesome cat ever.

When i think of the mama cat's tongue stimulating the defecating process i think of sandpaper at the butt...kinda painful thought. But cats that are inseparable...thats is a picture of love and bliss.
Almost all of my photos of them are side by side. They are so sweet- we ended up keeping them because they are special needs, and it's super difficult to find someone who will take that kind of a responsibility on... But they have enriched our lives a thousand fold <3
It's amazing to watch: When you bottlefeed kittens they grow up thinking they are like you. Yes, they learned cat things from the resident cats, but they think they are humans :) They have so many human characteristics!
They are...like my cat...i talk to her and she will respond. I kinda get her half of the time and i appear stupid to her for the other half. My cat cant accept another feline in the house. We tried. She will aggressive attack the other cat although outside the house she is usually the victim.

got a couple of rescues.. first post i put up. titled Pet. his names lex.. he had chest problems, and eye trouble, cold teabag sorted his eye issue in a few days. vets for the rest, he was dumped during freezing almost snow season, at a neighbours, who rang us.. 2yrs on he's a proper character, bit more friendlier than normal, and wrecks kitchens ha

Oh I am so sorry to hear this. I will tell you what I, and the veterinarians I work with, tell people- the best thing to do is adopt a new friend right away. It will not lessen the pain of your loss, but it will help distract you and ease the mourning process. It truly helps. And you will be saving a life <3

I began rescuing full time in 2009 because my then boyfriend worked for a veterinarian. I just couldn't not help! So many are put down unnecessarily- this 50 year old woman came in with a gorgeous 2 year old Persian. I was there surprising my bf with lunch, waiting for him to finish with a patient. This disgusting female was yelling at the vet to put her cat down. The reason? He was using the bathtub to urinate and defecate.
He was in absolute perfect physical health.
As much as the vet and assistant tried to explain to try a new litter, move the litterbox etc- this woman wouldn't budge. The vet then said firmly, "this is why I warned you against declawing. You should never have taken him for that procedure, which we never do because just think how messed up in the head you'd be if you awoke from sleep with your fingers amputated at the third knuckle?
Another vet pulled that vet out and pointed at me. I nodded.
The vet "reluctantly" told the woman she would perform the euthanasia. The woman filled out the necessary paperwork and the vet told her she would do it after she took care of her waiting appointments. Woman left. Vet gifted me the almost $400 for the "procedure" for my rescue.
I went to the clinic to bring lunch and left with a kitty :) I figured out his preferred litter and box placement over the next few weeks and found a perfect home for him :)
Rescuing has certainly left me jaded against some people...

OMG. People like that should be put down. That is horrible!. I don't mean that of course but putting an animal down for any other reason other than the animal is terminally ill, uncurable and in severe pain is an absolute horror. Thank God for people such as yourself. :) I am going to go read that post of yours now.
The measure of someone's character is how you treat animals, someone once said. By that measure you're a hero!
I can't say I've ever been called a hero before. I honestly can't say I look at myself as one, I just care for the poor victimized animals. I can't not, even when I'm beyond capacity lol. My heart cannot stand the thought of them being euthanized just because of mean, heartless people.
