How to grow wheat grass easy! Part one

in #howto7 years ago

I have growing wheat grass on and off for a while and I've discover that it is easy for anyone to do and very low cost. Also it has a lot of health benefits to drinking wheat grass juice. I won't into the details and nutritional facts as there is already so much information of it.

Here we go!

First a list of things you will need.

The seeds can be easily obtained from your local health foods stores like Wholefoods or Trader Joe's. You can also get it online places like Amazon. I got mine from wholefoods bulk section at 1.99 USD per a pound, it will be labeled as wheatgrass hard red wheat berries.

Next find some containers for growing. You can use any plastic containers, just make sure that you can drill a few holes at the bottom for water drainage and have a good size. I have used tupperware from the dollar store, empty berry containers, mushroom containers. I am currently using a old mushroom container that I've recycled and those plastic takeout contains.
Next step is to measure out how much seeds you can grow. This can simply be done by covering the bottom of the contains with a layer of seeds.

Next you have to sprout the seeds and this can be accomplished by soaking the seeds overnight. And with water of course.

As they are soaking think of what growing medium you would like to grow the seeds with. You can use anything from soil, coconut coir, peat moss, I have even used shredded paper towels. This time I decide to go with a potting soil mix .

8 to 16 hours later of soaking the seed you should see tails coming out. You want to gently rinse the seeds so that it washes out the likely hood of mold.

I had only soaked the seed for about 6 hours and usually you might want to soak it a little more but I was feeling lucky.

When you fill your growing containers with your growing medium, make sure that its even and flat although on the top so that it can all grow evenly. Then when you plant the sprouted seeds also make sure that its a even single layer covering the top. This is optional but I had covered the seeds with a layer of soil. Its important that for the first few days, that you cover the container with something loose and light. Some use news paper or just anything that blocks light, you don't really need to do this but it will provide a better yield since it thinks that in needs to grow farther up to reach the light.

Give them plenty of water when you first plant it and then after it won't need as much water. And if you have a spray bottle a few spritz to moisten them will be plenty of water each day.

A few days later, you should see that it has grown a few inches.

And 7 to 8 days later your grass should be ready for harvest. You can just use a pair of scissors and trim them 1 to 2 inches from the base. And the great thing about grass is that it can grow back once or twice after trimming. I don't have picture of fully grown wheat grass since they are just at the stage of that last photo but I will come back in about 6 days on the next post.

I hope this was helpful to anyone who is trying to grow wheat grass to get the benefits from it. Thank you!

Hi @wanderingsage! I used to grow wheatgrass like crazy... I loved the flavor of freshly pressed wheatgrass juice :)

Yes the flavor is pretty awesome. :)

I appreciate that post.

wow. thanks for sharing. this is really helpful

Thank you, glad you liked it. Can't wait to show the final product.

Wheat grass is awesome, powerful stuff. Good to mix into a green/fruit smoothy. It doesn't taste good if you drink it pure...

I usually mix it with other fruits and vegetables juice but sometimes I make a potent shot of ginger wheat grass and it's like lightning, no need for caffeine at all. Can't say it taste pleasant though lol

Yeah, ginger is #2 on my favorite list, right after Turmeric.

Congratulations @wanderingsage!

Wheat grass juice is also called green blood. It is very-very healthy and immune booster.

Amazing @wanderingsage
This is a healthy food and very easy to make as well.
How long can we trim it?

Usually I trim them when they reach about 7-8 inches in height.
