Have you seen Norsemen yet?
Well, I had never heard of the show before but being a fan of the History Channel's 'Vikings', and the history of that time period in general, I decided to give the show a go and boy am I glad I did.
I am sure that this show will gain status as time goes on, it is hilarious – at least if you like dry English-style humor like myself. Take 25% each of British comedies 'The Office' and 'Monty Python' and throw in the aforementioned 'Vikings' TV show for the remainder and you get Norsemen.
What is really cool is that they shoot each scene twice – first in Norwegian and then in English. The actors' authentic accents just add to the hilarious episodes. The sets, costumes, and locations are amazing and nothing about them that would take you away from actually believing they are in the Viking age.
Set in 790, it tells the story of the residents of the village of Nordheim as they go about their days. The writers of the show have taken the backdrop of 8th century Norway and given the characters modern day life issues to deal with in a satirical way. From raids on England, to local politics, to the private – and often hilarious - lives of each of them, there is something to make you chuckle.
Taking the powerful warrior Arvid from bachelorhood to marriage in one fell swoop and him finding out having a wife may not be all that it's cracked up to be.
To Kark, a slave that has accepted his place in Norse society, and all that entails, without sadness. Oh, and how could I forget Rufus, the thespian Roman-turned-slave that has not accepted his new situation at all.
Simply put, this is an under the radar comedy that is destined to have a cult following.
Episode One - the first few minutes
After being introduced to the show by an old man throwing himself off a cliff, we head back to the village.
Acting Chieftan Orm, a scared and cowardly man, has been holding the village for his brother who has been off on a raid, and finds that he likes being in charge. He might not be so sad if his brother doesn't make it back, after all they are past due to return.
But it is not to be after his sister-in-law Hildur decides to sacrifice a few slaves to the Gods for the safe return of the ship. Kark, who was set to be the third slave to be sacrificed asking if Hildur thought that maybe - just maybe - three sacrifices was too much as “It might look like you are trying too hard.” Luckily for Kark, the ship showed up just after # 2 lost his head.
Orm goes to the shore to greet his brother and the rest of the party including his wife Froya who went on the raid as well, but she gives him the cold-shoulder. Shortly after we find out that she has really proved her worth out there as a fighter and “Even took part in quite a lot of the raping.”
Arvid joins in and says “I was totally blown away when I saw her on top of this monk moaning and groaning.” (as he mimicks double fisting two cocks into his mouth)
Conclusion
That is just a snippet of the type of humor that you will find in this show. Once I watched one episode I was hooked. Even with my time-deficient schedule, I watched the first season in two days.
I am glad Netflix chose to continue onward to a season 2, and I hope that more follow. I am not ready to stop watching – I need MORE Netflix, MORE!
I give NORSEMEN an outstanding 9/10
Go watch it!
Netflix has been releasing great series lately.
Have you watch a German series called Dark? I think it’s on par with Stranger things. It is that good!
And like 2 days algo I remember seeing there were one new fiction series, Altered Carbon, although I haven't watch any episode yet.
One series that is one of my favorites and perhaps I already commented it to you is black mirror. Every episode is like a mini movie with a great futurist story! Totally worth watching!
Cheers pal!
I haven't heard or watched Dark, but I did enjoy Stranger Things.
Altered Carbon did peak my interest as well - I will probably watch that sometime as well.
i wasn't aware of this series getonthetrain but after reading your post i'm going to watch it for sure....upvoted!!!...thank you for sharing with us!!!
Enjoy! Come back and tell me if it's your type of show or not.
It's a fantastic piss take on Vikings, but without being slapstick (eg. The polar opposite of Meet the Spartans). It's humour is dry as a bone and delivered magnificently. It's genuinely the first time I've laughed at a comedy series in a bit. @getonthetrain
I am sure glad I stumbled upon it - you really don't hear anyone talking about this show but it is great!
I did no watch it yet but after reading the review i am laughing out loud :D :D :D
I am sure you're or you have been a script writer because your write is quite wonderful and the terms you used are supremely lovely <3
After reading your review i am going to watch Netflixing Norsemen with my friends soon :) :) :)
Keep writing such wonderful reviews My Friend ;)
Laying it on pretty thick here - lol :D
Noted and added to my waiting list. Suits, Breaking bad are top on my waiting list currently. TV series are much addictive so holding myself back to start watching one.
I remember my sleepless nights watching Game of Thrones to catch-up when season 5 was being aired.
Oh, Breaking Bad is a good show. Haven't watched suits.
Netflix have been killing it with these originals
Another good one is; The end of the f**kn world
I've seen that one, it did seem interesting at first glance.
Since u highly recommend it, I will watch this during Chinese New Year holidays!
The first season is just 6 episodes so it isn't hard to watch the whole thing quickly.
Then I could finish them all in one sitting .. let you know how I like it or not .
Woow, two weeks ago I started watching Vikings trying to wait for the arrival of GOT, but I really liked that series, and yesterday I finished watching Season 4, I can not describe how I liked this series, I'll probably wait for all the episodes of the temorada 5 are available to finish watching it, but after finishing watching this last season, I will surely add Norsemen to the list. Thank you very much for the recommendation.
Oh, I think it is a great show to watch after Vikings - same era but so funny
wow...the movie looks good though i didn't get it well. i think i will have to download it and watch it well and have a general l knowledge of the movie.
I'll have to look into it!
We just watched the first episode of Altered Carbon last night. Holy shit is it trippy! Super interesting.
Oh, I'm hearing good things about Altered Carbon, I'll have to make time to watch it
And so, the bingewatch beings lol Like the theme, thanks for bringing it up :)
Btw have you seen Faulty Towers, The IT Crowd, Peep Show and Black Adder @getonthetrain?
I've only seen a few episodes of The IT Crowd, but I have heard of the rest. Sometimes a show is TOO British if you know what I mean :)
No doubt about that, I struggled so much to finish the office....so realisticaly cringy!
That sounds awesome, and right up my alley. Definitely going to check it out. After having just binge-watched the first season of Altered Carbon, I'm in the mood for some lighter fare and humor.
Oh Starr, this show is made for you! Haha, enjoy :D
I'll give this a try, been from the uk something new to watch if i get a free hour
I'd say it'll be worth it 😛
So funny
