Humphrey Bogart: Not A Fan

This might be an unpopular view but I am not a fan of Humphrey Bogart. He is one of the most notable actors of all time. The films he appeared in are some of those of legend.

It is hard to overlook The African Queen and Key Largo. While I liked those films (actually really liked the later), for some reason it is hard for me to like Bogey.

Was it his acting?

Certainly not. He was spot on with all the roles cast in. He was versatile showing the range of his abilities.

So what was it?

That is where I can't put my finger on it. I never could.

It is just one of those situations where there was something that made if tough for me to embrace him. Perhaps it was the fact that he was always a leading man and that was tough for me to swallow.

Casablanca is regularly cited as one of the top movies of all time. It is hard to argue with Bogart's role as nightclub owner Rick Blaine since it was a large reason why it won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

We also see one of the most famous lines in movie history: "Play it again, Sam".

Does anyone else find themselves in the same situation? Perhaps not with Bogart but with other actors or actresses?

Another one I find difficult to embrace is Tim Robbins. There is just something about the guy even tough he was in probably one of my favorite films, "The Shawshank Redemption*. It might be stemming from the Bull Durham days.

I would be interested in hearing from others if anyone has the same view.

What are your thoughts?

Sort:

Not very familiar with this actor(Not an old movie fan) but I know what you mean about not liking some actors and not sure why but I feel that was about brad Pitt. IDK I just am not a fan of him I think I have watched most of his movies but just not a fan.

Yeah it happens.

Bogart is in some of the all time classics, that is the thing. That said, him being in a film turned me off.

Humphrey Bogart sometimes acted as himself, thats an objection I suppose.

I really cant answer it. Of the all time greats, this is something I always felt about him.

I guess it is just one of those things.

Probably be Tom Cruise for me. I like the MI series, Jack Reacher, a couple other sci-fi things he's done. Overall though I really don't care for him. Maybe it's the Scientology thing, I don't know. :)

I can see that. I don't mind him but I wouldnt put him in my favorite actor categories.

Bogart didn't look like typical Hollywood star and until 1940s he was not star at all. In first decade or so of his Hollywood career he was considered to be a character actor and usually played villains.

Clint Eastwood for me. In my opinion he doesn't act. He just shows up as himself, over and over.
