Warrior Statue Watching Over Budapest
Whilst sorting through my photographs I found this picture of a statue that represents 'progress'. It is of a triumphant figure holding a torch and flanks the Liberty or Freedom Statue.
The Liberty Monument stands on top of Gellért Hill and overlooks the city of Budapest.
It was built in honor of the Soviet soldiers who liberated Budapest in 1945, at the end of the Second World War.
Be sure to click on the image to view it full screen!
After the fall of Communism in 1989 most of the Soviet monuments and symbols in Budapest were removed. The 'Liberty Monument' is one of the exceptions, although it was subtly renamed from Liberation Monument.
Here is a shot of the cityscape of Budapest from the other side of the hill.

Thank you to @juliank and @photocontests for the daily Cityscape photography contest.
I am also entring this to the Statue Friday contest based on @erikah's #sevendaysoutside challenge which is a collaboratioen with @photocircle. Full details of the contest can be found by clicking here.
That's a pretty dramatic stance the warrior has. Almost like it's using the torch to parry with or something. Very compelling history. I don't always think about the rest of the Soviet Union outside of Russia and how those countries must have felt when it all fell apart. Now, enough time has passed that it's harder to think in those terms, and so many young folks probably don't even know the history of it. I certainly hope the students of Budapest do.
I think most of the young people will know the history @glenalbrethsen. It is too close for them not to.
Their parents lived through very turbulent and very different times.
This looks like a dense city! I can't believe the buildings look all whitish!? No modern business quartal?
it doesn't feel overly dense when you are there @rimicane. The picture is taken from pretty high up so it probably gives a bit of a false impression. I can't remember if there is a modern business district. I don't remember one. 😊
I really like the composition of that first shot. It would be interesting to see what it looks like by night, too. I suppose there's a lot of ambient light coming off the city.
I think I have some night shots @fotosdenada. But I think they are of buildings rather than the whole city scape. I'll post one if I find one. 😊
Budapest is on my bucket list! It has to be awesome! Great photos! You should put the first one on @erikah's contest!
Good idea @nolasco. It might be a bit late now as I've already used it and have the wrong tags. Maybe I'll see if I can edit them later. 😊
And now this contest ha a wonderful boost! Just check out the post! https://steemit.com/pc-explore/@photocircle/pc-explore-sevendaysoutside-contest-collaboration-is-now-officially-open
I'm going to make a statue post myself later on ;)!
Do that, Gillian, it's a wonderful photo!
Big hug!
Thank you @nolasco. I changed the tags but I thought I read somewhere that the posts were supposed to be local?
Did you see that anywhere? I noticed you made a post with pictures from Paris. 😁
I don't think they have to be local. Never read it anywhere, and @erikah would have me told that if it was the case. And I've posted photos of foreigner countries on her contest before. Can you remember where you read that?
I think it was in the original post where the contest was introduced @nolasco but I could be wrong. 😊
Oh, if it was one day it no longer is. Your post and mine won, yeyyyy! Congrats!

What a view Liberty has! Wonderful view of Budapest. Nice photos @gillianpearce
Thank you @steven-patrick. It is a very picturesque city but not easy to show at it's best with only a camera phone. 😊

I like the words that go with the photo. The shot of the city from that angle is great also. I think I'll participate in this photo contest. Thanks for letting me know about this.
There are lots of similar contest to participate in @chidijohn7. Just keep looking.
Thank you for visiting. 😊
pretty awesome :)
Glad you like it @bigotemaifriend. Thank you for visiting. 😊
U welcome! 😊🍀
howdy there @gillianpearce! are you out traveling all over the world again? I really like that statue, I'm glad they didn't take it down. were you there on business or vacation?
Nope @janton. Sadly I'm not traveling all over the world again.
I am in Devon which is away from home but still in the UK.
This was a long weekend trip the children bought John and I for Christmas a couple of years back. 😊
man..I wish someone would buy me a trip like that!
so is your time in Devon going as well as your previous stay?
It's going well but not in the way I'd hoped @janton.
My previous stay worked much better because I was on retreat whereas this time I've been visiting and working and supporting my friend in her business.
It's been really busy and full of lots of people. I'm quite used to having plenty of time on my own but it's all good. 😁
I've booked a train ticket to go home on Sunday. I've been here a week tomorrow and it has really flown by on the one hand but it feels ages since I was at home on the other. 😊
yes Ma'am I understand about getting back home, do you have any pets like dogs or are they not allowed in England? lol.
well, it sounds like you need to go on another retreat then, what does that take? how do you make that happen?
I don't have any pets @janton. I'm not a big fan of them.
There's another, shorter retreat in November but not sure if I'll be going to that one or not. 😊
howdy today @gillianpearce! yes I think you should definitely go on that retreat, short or not. Or else plan a long one! something exotic this time please! lol.
