The Bighorn Sheep of the Fryingpan River

in #hunting7 years ago (edited)

Few big game animals in North America can express the elegant fortitude and heart aching beauty of the Bighorn Sheep.

They are the quintessential Rocky Mountain beast, perfectly at home on impossibly rugged, windswept ridges and the broken, snag-jumbled country where mere mortals, and angels fear to tread.

Occasionally, they place themselves where the average person can get a full view.

Wildlife Photographer Frank Donofrio of Glenwood Springs, Colorado caught this band of Bighorn Sheep on an island in the middle of The Frying Pan River above Basalt, Colorado. They offer us a brief and compelling look into a world most often not easily observed. The images are absolutely stunning, and I am left with an overwhelming desire for more.

Fortunately, that is within my realm of possibility, for they are often seen not too far from my comfortable chair.

I think I shall have a good look for them, today...

After all, someone has to do it!

Very nice! I have put in for sheep in AZ for over 10 years. Just not THAT lucky. lol

I know exactly what you mean. I was lucky enough to bowhunt these sheep on the Fryingpan years ago. They were more than a match for my limited skills. There's always next time, I hope...

How much does licens the Bighorn cost hunt?

Last year a non-resident tag was over $2000. The hard part though is winning a slot in the lottery. It can take ten years or more, even 20. Maybe never. It's a long wait. I did hunt them several years ago.

Very expensive, in Russia the license for a bear is not that expensive.

A hunt in Russia is tops on my bucket list. I would love to here more about your experiences there...
