Surfing through the web as I always do most of the time a day, I find a book that has an interesting plot line. I immediately wanted to buy it, but as I went to check the price on Amazon, it was clearly out of my budget. I was thoroughly disappointed and heading back to aimless browsing when I noticed that the book had a 4.9 stars from 5, on an average, by around 300 people. I went through the reviews and almost everyone had praised the likes of the book and said that it was worth every penny. I immediately cancelled a few plans to fit that into my budget and ordered it. After reading it, I was simply overwhelmed. It was an amazing story, and it changed my life. Had I not gone through the reviews, I might not have purchased the book and never known this precious feeling of reading that book.
Similarly, while surfing through the web (again), I saw a pretty dress from a particular website from which I commonly didn't buy merchandise. I was torn apart between deciding whether to risk it or not. I looked up the reviews, and saw that most of the reviews talked about getting a dress of different colour, or a dress that lost its colour in a few washes, and one of them had a rip after two months. I looked up the website app on appstore and found that it has very low ratings and bad reviews. I was saved from spending my money on something like that. Again, I had those reviewers to thank.
Similarly, another time, when I was not surfing the web (thankfully), I had to catch up with a friend. We went inside the first restaurant we saw. The menu was very elaborate and we have no clue what to order. I immediately opened Zomato which had reviews that stated what tasted the best there. Undoubtedly, we had a lip smacking meal. However there have been times where some products had great reviews and after purchasing them I ended up being disappointed.
Nevertheless, reviews are really important for our everyday life. At each and every moment, we need a person who knows, so that he could help us. We watch movies based on ratings on Imdb and Rotten Tomatoes, we read books according to reviews on Goodreads, we buy products after reading reviews from Amazon, we buy food from restaurants after looking at reviews of Zomato, we book hotels after checking reviews of TripAdvisor.
Drawbacks-
We rely on reviews so that our hard earned money is not unnecessarily spent. However, big companies that are aiming for profits, often make fake reviews by paying people money. Sometimes, they hide bad reviews from websites. Such scenarios often lead to our loss. Moreover, reviewers, who provide us with so much help, are not given any credits for their hard work.
We would lose valuable reviews if we don't give any motivation to them. Peer reviews on scientific journals are almost priceless. But there is no reward system for them. Not only reviews help users in their choices, but also help companies and industries know what their products are lacking so that they can modify them and make those products more useful for customers.
