There has been a lot of improvements in many fields of science and Engineering, but there has been not much of an advancement in things that we use daily, such as going shopping for groceries. While the others fields have grown by leaps and bounds, the only advancement in the perishable goods field was the ability to store and preserve them for longer than what was possible before.
This was pioneered by the introduction of Air Conditioning and Cold Storage devices. This was just the effect of advancement in some other field getting reflected here. We still are going about the method of distribution and sales of perishable goods the same way we used to do it few centuries ago.
The Producer grow the goods and sells it to the distributor or nearby shops for a certain price. They then either transport the goods to a nearby market or just sell them at their shops for a much higher rate than what they got it for. This means that we get to purchase it, we get to at a much higher price than what it was supposed to be. This and the fact that it takes time to transport or atleast a day or two and the produce is not as fresh as it originally was.
If we wanted fresh produce we had to either grow it ourselves, which was basically impossible if one resided in cities or if you don't have enough real estate to support it or pay extra for getting it.
There is also the fact that the farmers and producers of such goods don't always get what they are supposed to get. This has led to a lot of people not preferring to become one for the same reason. There have been lot of cases where the producer groups have protested and a lot of cases where many have ended their lives due to the fact that they were unable to pay back their loans that they had taken to grow produce or not being able to support themselves and their family.
People think of IT and Software jobs to be some sort of a status symbol while something that helps feed the world's population is considered to be a lowly job. This has become the mindset of a lot of people, making them view Farming as something that only the poor or if one has nothing else to do. Just think of the situation where everyone in the farming field left their jobs and started doing some other profession. We would face a lot of food shortages and then we might realise the importance and take pride in doing it.
