Bank Insurance Advert illustrations 3/3

Here is the story about third illustration for strange and unusual Y&R advertising agency order. I had to create 3 different ad illustrations to apply them into photorealistic images sort of an augmented reality showing: it is safe to run small business in Russia using VTB24 insurance. Strange because actually it has nothing to do with safety at all and the message was unobvious here. And it was unusual for me because it was a first time of using photos together with my illustrations in the same layout.

Other illustrations for this project:
First illustration. Alien orders a hamburger.
Second illustration. Cute monster gets sweater.

Third illustration was the most complicated in details and the best one to have in portfolio (in my opinion). According to the brief I had to draw six gnomes coming to the barbershop to cut their beards.

My sketching process went slow and hard here. First they said Gnomes should be less cute, even less, less... They should not look like from a kids cartoon. But c'mon, guys! You chose my style actually. In my world there are no adult-like gnomes. Then there was even more fun comments like Gnome can not come out of the mirror - this is unreal! or Remove the mobile. Gnome can not have a phone. It is ancient gnome! Okay...

Then they've send me this bad news asking if I can just color their sketch. I said no and was in the state to completely cancel this order since they didn't payed me any money in advance anyway. It would be a big pain to color this sketch. For me it looked like a page from ugly soviet erotic comic magazine from 1989. And what a mess! They've been asking to create twice more characters at the same price. Composition was spoiled. Too much of them in the same place.

After some discussion they agreed to my arguments asking for some corrections according to my style.

Then the coloring process started. You can call it the Magic of Photoshop but it looks almost similar to original coloring in real materials actually but faster with an ability to massively Ctrl+Z anything. I liked the gamma of this environment. There was a color harmony so was inspired to color it.

There were some boring comments to add more of brand blue again and other stuff like that which I am not going to show you but here the final is.

P.S. They've even created video advertisings from these 3 illustrations and overall idea there looks more logical but still it's strange and pretty unclear.

Great work mate! It's nice to hear the story of how this job progressed and the troubles you faced with your client. I have been in a similar situations many times, where the client asks you to complete an illustration but half way through realizes he doesn't like your style. These are the worst parts of this job and are mostly caused by the unclear vision of the client.

Thank you for your support :) yeah, this is the most painful in our work I guess. Another same fun thing here on the project was that these images were used for animations and from 10 seconds only half of the second was my illustration showing there. This is nothing :)

So much skill, cool to see them come to life

Thank you :)

Great work...I always love your style...How did you paint the bricks, Mehn... You're so good...
Welldone Mentor

Haha, thank you! It's not hard when you have such a great references just using eyedropper tool taking the right colors and paint...

Wow, what a work. Sounds like clients from hell ;-) First when i read your aritcle i thought it might have something to do with them: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heinzelmännchen but when you said they came to the barber shop to get their hairs cutted i got confused :D

Haha, that really looks similar to that gnomes Heinzelmannchens :)

Yeah, they could be their initial inspiration or so :)

This is freaking awesome! I love it especially that barber one in color with the little gnomes... the last one lol

What do you mean by million sticker?

Oh my, that client seems like a pain in the peep! Stuff like that is so demotivating. Their sketch is aweful!
I'm glad they listened to you in the end!

They turned out superbly! Those banking services should be honored to have your art as part of their advertising campaigns!

Haha, thank you! I guess they will never ever wonder who done this but this is nice to hear :)

I'm sure there are going to be people who would enjoy it. But sure, most people see something cool and like it, but don't really stop to wonder who the author is.

You always amaze me ! :-)

Your wife is lucky , you thought her how to do illustrations like this ! :-)
