Operation Cactus: How Indian soldiers reached the Maldives and overturned the coup...........

in #india7 years ago

India is constantly watching the political crisis on the neighboring country Maldives . Indian forces have also been alerted that they should be ready for the departure of the Maldives. If the army gets signs of going to Maldives then this will not be the first time that Indian forces will help in this way. It has happened before. Which is remembered in the name of Operation Cactus in history.

In the year 1988, the Indian Army had helped in this way 30 years ago. On November 3, 1988, Sri Lanka's extremist organization People's Liberation Organization of Tamil Eel arrived in Maldives. The militants arrived in the Maldives in the form of tourists. Abdullah Lathufi, a Maldivian citizen living in Sri Lanka, had planned the Takhta Plate and under this scheme the militants were admitted to the Maldives.

As soon as they entered the Maldives, the militants took possession of the government buildings of the capital city. On seeing, the militants at Maal's airport, television stations and harbors were captured. The militant group wanted to reach the then President Mamun Abdul Gayoom. As soon as Gueum realized this danger, he sent an emergency message to the heads of many countries. As soon as the Indian prime minister Rajiv Gandhi got the message, he came into action. India is the first country in countries that help the Maldives.

As soon as the instructions were received from the Prime Minister, 300 jawans left for the Maldivian capital, Malé. India's Army MaldivesHulhule reached the airport, as it was under the control of the Maldives army. Earlier, the troop had been sent from Agra Cantt. After reaching the Maldives, one troop was also given a green signal from Kochi. From the moment of filing of Indian Army, the militants got stunned. The Indian Army also started coming into action as soon as they reached there. When he arrived, he took possession of Malé's airport and secured the then President Geum.

On one hand, while the Indian Air Force's Miraj aircraft were seen flying on the sky, on the other side, Indian Navy warships Godavari and Betwa had also come under the hammer. The Navy first cut off the supply lines of militants between Sri Lanka and Maldives.

Now the Indian army was occupied all around, when they began to disperse the militants, then they ran towards Sri Lanka in the devastated. As he goes, he kidnapped a ship. Here also the Front handled the Indian Army. The Navy was ordered, INS Godavari came into action and a helicopter blew it for its help. Near the ship, India's navy personnel were dropped, where tremendous encounter took place and 19 people died. Most of these were militants.

After independence, this was India's first military campaign on foreign soil, which also got success. This operation was named Operation Cactus. After this operation, most of the soldiers returned to the Indian government but 150 soldiers remained posted in the Maldives for almost a year. The operation cactus name is still counted as one of the successful operations of the world.

I did not know about the history of the Maldives getting help from Indian Army in the past. But, I am aware of the present status of Maldives' Emergency. The Indian government is keeping an eye on the situation of the government status.
