Blockchain technology started with cryptocurrencies and now some Indian State Governments want to reap the benefits of this technology. The Indian states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are set to pioneer Blockchain technology to store public data. This essentially distributed database will provide security, transparency and better governance.
"Simply put, it's going to be an open platform where anyone can see who holds the land and since it's encrypted, people wouldn't be able to tamper with the data," said E Magesh, director of C-DAC, Hyderabad. "It brings in more transparency and the integrity of the information is maintained."- ET
The State of Telangana has already pilot programme in parts of Hyderabad to use blockchain technology. Soon land registration and civil supplies shall be making use of the technology. This initiative will soon be followed by Andhra Pradesh state government. Further, the State Governments of, Gujarat, Karnataka and Maharashtra, also have started to evaluate the potential of Blockchain technology for better e-governance in the respective states.
India has previously faced ransomeware attacks, which has caused threat to store digital public information. In light of the developments various State Governments have reached out to several Indian startups dealing with blockchain technology. However, there lie several challenges in creating a public blockchain as it will be difficult to administer any changes to the network.
Nevertheless, this move by various state governments shall help shield sensitive information from potential security breaches.
