Kamuthi, a town in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu hosts the world's largest solar plant at a single location. Built with an investment of around 45billion INR which is approximately 700 million USD, this plant spans over an area of 10 sq km, equivalent to about 950 Olympic-sized football fields! - wew quite a massive plant! With 2.5 million solar modules installed, Kamuthi at full capacity can provide enough electricity to power around 265,000 households each year - now that's something that every Indian needs to be proud of! And to add more to its glory, the entire facility was completed within a record time of just eight months!
To add to the facts list,
- The plant was commissioned by the Gujarat-based Adani group
- Each year, 648MW of clean and green electricity is generated and exported to the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu since March 31st,2016.
- To put this massive solar plant together on time, is a team of nearly 8,500 dedicated personnel who worked day and night in all weather conditions to achieve the impossible.
A year after our prime minister Mr. Narendra Modi championed the International Solar Alliance at the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris, the country is making clear moves to reduce dependency on fossil fuels. India has made to the list of a handful of countries across the world that generate more than 10 gigawatts of solar power and the government is planning to raise more money to quadruple the current solar power to 1 terawatt by 2030!
To know more, watch the National Geographic Channel’s Megastructures episode that highlights how the world’s largest single location solar power project harnesses the power of the sun.
Lets congratulate Steemians the countries realizing the need for a shift from coal to renewable sources of energy and taking big steps in that direction - mother earth needs to be preserved!
And for Kamuthi and 648MW of clean electricy - lets take pride in being an Indian!
Jai Hindi!
MW is the power of the plant, Energy is expressed in MWh.
Do you know what is the average consumption of electricity per inhabitant in India ? Congratulations for your article.
Truly Brilliant post! Solar power is the future, its the best alternative to fossil fuel...& fossil fuel being depleted in the years to come, Solar power will definitely prove its real worth. We have not been way to eager to tap the solar power in totality, due to various reasons, political being one of them, but the time has come to completely switch over as soon as we all can. Its emission-free, pollution-free and economical alternative, still taking lot of time to bridge the Urban-Rural gap. Since rural areas have been quite active enough to tap solar energy, in the absence of regular power supply.
Now is the time to decode and share the solar panels technology with the common man and let the creative side of common man do the wonders to implement and tap the solar power in totality.
Cheers! :)
