Udaya Kumar Dharmalingam is the designer of the Indian Rupee sign. He is a resident of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He is an Assistant Professor at IIT Guwahati. His symbol was chosen from the five last short-listed symbols. Uday Kumar explained that the design is based on the Indian tricolor.
