A stunning endemic Indonesian primate

  1. Jojo or Kelawai langut

joja or kelawai langut (Presbytis potenziani) has the most beautiful form among the endemic primates, with shiny black backs, dark brown stomach, white around the face and neck and a long, black tail like a silk .

Although included in the large and widespread Asian tropical genus, joja is unique in many ways. .female adult and male partners participate in cries and demonstrations of challenges against other groups, unlike other types of arboreal apes, because only males do both.

joja usually sounds before dawn and is used as a mark of its territory so that other animal groups can avoid themselves. This true arboreal primate, for most of his life lived in trees and rarely descended to the ground. the food consists of half the fruits, 35% of the leaves and 15% of the grains, nuts, flowers and other plant matter.

  1. Simakobu or Pig tailed monkeys

Simakobu or pig-tailed monkeys (Simias concolor) belong to the bekantan family. But simakobu is very different from bekantan and all other monkey forms because of its short tail resembles a pig's tail, a short fat body and limbs of equal length. there are two types of color fur simakobu namely gray old and golden

These primates are also arboreal, live on trees and eat foliage. Simakobu live in a group consisting of 1 female, 1-5 adult males and children. adult males are larger in size than adult females and have twice as long canine teeth as adult female fangs.

Pig tail monkeys are very easy to hunt. a simakobu often runs away at close range and then sits hiding in the canopy making it an easy target for hunters. Simakobu hunted twice more than other types. if one group flees, the female will be left behind so that Simakobu females are more often killed than males.

  1. Bokkoi(Macaca pagensis)

Bokkoi or Mentawai (Macaca pagensis) are very closely related to the marshes of Sumatra, Borneo and the Southeast Asian continent, but have a darker coat of color contrasting with the white cheeks and unique cries. this beruk not only live on the big island, but also live in small islands such as Siberut Island.

These primates also sounded before dawn but did not show cries of territory.male bokkoi repeatedly issued cries in order to keep in touch with members of his group who also responded with the screams and voices they used to spend to keep in touch with each other in the dense forest.

in one group Bokkoi consists of 30 individuals, generally consisting of one male with from 8-10 individuals only. One group will terabgi into several small groups to find food and re-join at night.

bokkoi habitat is very wide, from the mangrove area to the primary forest dipterocarpaceae and logged forests and agricultural fields where they often find food. This primate is therefore at least investigated. the meat is delicious, making these primates are often hunted and consumed in some areas.

  1. Orang utan

Previously, many people thought orangutans only exist in Sumatra (Pongo ablii) and in Kalimantan (Pongo pygmaeus). However, according to a recent study known, there was 1 species of other orangutans with different subspecies of these two types. orangutan tapanuli or Pongo tapanuliensis name. This type of new itself was introduced to the public early November last year. Habitat is in isolated forests in the Batang Toru ecosystem, Tapanuli, North Sumatra. In the original habitat these three types of orangutans usually live in forests and swamps. they can live until the age of 45 years. Animals that have a DNA similarity of up to 97 percent with humans this population in their native habitat continues to decline. According to WWF data, only 23,000 orangutans live in Kalimantan. In Sumatra only 12,000 left. while in Tapanuli the number is unknown.

5.Tarsius or Tarsiers

Though not including monkeys, these little primates are often referred to as the smallest monkeys in the world. Of the 9 types of tarsiers in the world, 7 of them are endemic to Indonesia. Tarsier Tarsier and Tarsius Sulawesi's endemic pummy is the two most recognizable species. even so, all kinds of tarsiers including rare and protected animals in Indonesia. Tarsier has a length of about 10-15 cm with a weight of about 80 grams. even Tarsius pumilus or Pygmy tertiary which is the smallest type of tarsius only has a body length between 93-98 millimeters and weight 57 grams .

  1. Kedih or Thomas leaf monkey

The original origin is only found on the island of Sumatra, especially North Sumatra. Animal with the Latin name Presbytis Thomasi or Thomas Leaf Monkey is also included in the list of rare and almost extinct animals. usually live in groups of about 10, including one male and six females, plus several children. Currently, IUCN has included Thomasi Presbytis species in the vulnerable category and labeled the Red List .

7.Yaki

These animals can be found in northern Sulawesi and some surrounding islands. Yaki has black fur and has a crest on his head. Height of about 44-60 centimeters, weight about 7-15 kilograms. this animal is threatened with extinction due to local people who hunt yaki to eat.

8.Lutung jawa or Javan langur

Javan langur or Trachypithecus auratusmeralah endemic species of lutung Indonesia. Javan langur has a small body size, about 55 cm, with a tail that reaches 80 cm. Javan langur hair is black and female monkeys have silvery hairs around the genitals. Javan langur live in groups. Each group consists of about 7 - 20 heads of a monkey with a male as a group leader and some adult female elders.

9.Kukang or Slow loris

There are three species of lemurs in Indonesia, namely the slow loris (Nycticebus javanicus), the Sumatran loris (Nycticebus coucang), and the kalimantan loris (Nycticebus menagensis). All three are only distinguished from body weight and color hump. of the three types of lemurs, the Java loris is an endangered animal.

10.Owa jawa or Java gibbons

Java gibbons or Hylobates moloch is a small, tailless species of monkeys with gray hair. This animal has a small body slim compared to other types of apes. Unfortunately, the Javan gibbon is a rare and almost extinct animal. this animal belongs to a true tree monkey, because for most of its life these primates never descend from the top of the tree. Uniquely, although known as the king of the tree, Java gibbons instead include apes that walk erect with both legs.
