In the 17th century AD or 1601 Dutch East Indies kingdom came to the archipelago to trade, but on the next development they colonize this area. Dutch came to Indonesia with its chamber of commerce, VOC, since then almost all the territory of the archipelago mastered except Aceh. At that time between the Islamic kingdoms in the archipelago has not had time to form an alliance or cooperation. This is causing the propagation of propagation process cut off.

With the sumuliayatul (perfection) of Islam that there is no separation between certain aspects of life with others, this has been applied by the scholars of that time. When the colonization came, the scholars converted the pesantren into a base of struggle, the santri (pesantren students) became jundullah (troops of God) ready to fight the invaders, while the cleric became warlord. The potentials of growth and development in the 13th century became a resistance against the invaders. This can be proved by the existence of saga-saga at the time of the Islamic empire whose poetry contains a cry of struggle. The scholars inflame the jihad against the Dutch colonizers.
