History of the Old City Jakarta
In 1526, Fatahillah sent by the Sultanate of Demak attacked the port of Sunda Kelapa in the Kingdom of Pajajaran, which was later named Jayakarta.
Then, in 1619, the VOC destroyed Jayakarta which was then commandeered by Jan Pieterszoon Coen. A year later, the VOC built a new city called Batavia.
In 1635, the city extends to the western edge of the Ciliwung River. The city is designed in European Dutch style and is arranged in several blocks separated by canals.
The city of Batavia was completed in 1650 and then functioned as the headquarters of the VOC in the East Indies.
Due to a poor sanitation system, there was a tropical plague that struck the inhabitants. Then the city extends again to the south. In 1835 and 1870 many people moved to Weltevreden (the area around Merdeka Square).
During the Japanese occupation of 1942, Batavia was renamed Jakarta and became the capital of Indonesia to date.
In 1972, the Governor of Jakarta, Ali Sadikin, issued an official decree that made the Old City as a heritage site. This decision aims to protect the history of architecture and buildings that remain.
