In the past, especially in Aceh, the presences of Muslim traders from various pasts of the world have contributed significant development of Islamic teachings. As result, the king or the sultan of Samudra Pasai Kingdom at that time, Meurah Silu, was interested in Islam and learned it earnestly, hence the sultan was awarded the title Malik as-Saleh, which means The Pious King. During his reign, the government was run based on Islamic teachings and followed the reign pattern of Muslim kings in the world. The sultan ruled the kingdom in accordance with the Shari’ah of Islam. At that time, various groups of wanderers, who came from overseas, such as Marcopolo, Ibn Battuta, China, India, and Malabar arrived in Samudra Pasai Kingdom.
When the Sultan passed away, he was succeeded by his son Sultan Malik Az-Zahir, who was equally pious to his father. More than that, the period of Sultan Az-Zahir is the time when the first gold coin currency was used worldwide, therefore it can be a means of exchange of world trade.
This period was around the early 1300s or during the kingdom of Majapahit and Singosari on the Java Island. It was during this period that many scholars were sent to various parts of the archipelago to spread Islam such as to Thailand, Brunei and Philippines. At this time, the kingdom had not been separated yet into the Kingdom of Samudra and Pasai.
Since their periods, Samudra Kingdom achieved a magnificent glory. If the Samudra kingdom was not there, we could not know how the condition of Nusantara at present time. However, we do not deny the struggles of the Sultan and Sultanah after him, who helped completing the greatness of Islam in the archipelago and Southeast Asia. Among them are Sultanah Nahrisyah, Sultan Muhammad and Sultan Zainal Abidin. The legacy of the Sultanate of Islam during the time, besides the existence of the gold coin and dirham currency, are the establishment of multilateral diplomatic relations and the spread of Islam in Java through the guardians (Wali Songo). Moreover, the founders of Jayakarta, now Jakarta, came from Samudra Kingdomn, namely Falatehan, Portuguese said. The spread of Islam also covered Malay Peninsula, parts of Thailand, Singapore, and Brunei even to Maluku Tidore, Philippines.
How incredible the Kingdom of Samudra Pasai. Its history has been recorded and was very famous in various parts of the world. The bustling city of Samudera Pasai in the past is centered as the port with the most abandoned amount of foreign ships, which now disappeared due to tsunami which happened hundreds of years ago and the emergence of national roads that connects Medan - Banda Aceh. As result, the capital of Samudra Pasai remained quiet silent under the shade and lush of trees and aquaculture activities that often found very valuable such as rubies, jars, gold and dirham coins, pottery, etc. that continue to the present day.
