Population growth in the EU continues to rise, and Sweden has the third largest increase within the Union. It shows figures from Eurostat, reports the European portal. The main explanation is the big immigration. Without it, Europe would be 100 million fewer in 60 years.
Last year, Sweden's population increase was 1.24 percent and passed 10 million inhabitants.
It is the third largest increase after Malta and Luxembourg.
Looking at the entire 2000's, Sweden has had the sixth largest population increase in the EU.
Immigration is said to be the "main explanation" for the population to grow. It has been five times as high in comparison with the number of births minus deaths, writes Europaportalen.
Eurostat has developed various possible scenarios for the future. The most likely figure indicates a continued population increase by 2080.
Then the EU's population will be 518 million, something more than today. Sweden is expected to have the second largest population increase of 40 percent.
Eurostat has also calculated what would happen if you completely stopped immigration. Then the population would "reduce" to 408 million, about one hundred million fewer than today. In this scenario, in principle, all countries are expected to have a so-called declining population.
