Here’s a new reason why eating out might be bad for your health

Dining out frequently is known to increase one’s intake of unhealthy sugars and fats. But a new study suggests that there’s another reason to eat at home more often: phthalates.

Phthalates are potentially harmful chemicals found in hundreds of consumer products, including perfumes, hair sprays, shampoos and the plastics used in food processing and packaging.

“Phthalates are a class of synthetic chemicals known as endocrine disruptors, meaning they affect hormones in the body,” said Dr. Sheela Sathyanarayana, an associate professor of pediatrics at Seattle Children’s Hospital and the University of Washington and past chairwoman of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Children’s Health Protection Advisory Committee, who was not involved in the study. “Hormones are essential for normal body functions such as reproduction or metabolism.”

What else in fast food is loaded with endocrine disruptors? Why it's the lefts favorite food, Soy.

Many of soy’s health benefits have been linked to isoflavones—plant compounds that mimic estrogen. But animal studies suggest that eating large amounts of those estrogenic compounds might reduce fertility in women, trigger premature puberty and disrupt development of fetuses and children.

Although most studies looking at the hormone-disrupting properties of genistein, the main isoflavone in soy, have been conducted in rodents, many scientists believe the findings may be relevant to humans as well.

Soy is hidden in all sorts of products in the fast food industry like the hamburger patties, bun, sauces and even the french fry oil has soy in it. Lots of nasty chemicals in fast food that shouldn't even been considered food.

But make no mistake about, it these chemicals are in the food for a reason. The fast food industry loves them because they make the food cheaper and the health care industry loves them too because they make you sick, unhealthy and doctors can prescribe you an overpriced pharmaceutical drug that doesn't even work that well.

Now back to the original story.

“Most of the phthalates that are of most concern from a health perspective are plasticizers; they’re added to make plastics soft,” she added. “They’re added to food packaging, they can be in food handling gloves, and they can be found in food tubing.”

Where have I heard plasticizers in the food before? Oh ya it was the 'super healthy' fast food chain called Subway. Yoga mat bread was what it was called because it contained a plasticizer used in making Yoga mats. Super trendy if you ask me.

Another nasty chemical in food is used on french fries. It's a silicon 'organic' based polymer, sounds yummy doesn't it, don't worry it's organic and safe for you to eat or so the lie goes.

-Dimethylpolysiloxane—used as an anti-foaming agent, this industrial chemical is typically used in caulking and sealants and comes with a list of safety concerns.

Knowledge is power and learning about the nasty stuff in fast food can help you choose a better alternative. I love fast food fries but learning about the ingredients in the oil really makes me dislike them and lately when I do eat fast food I've been choosing options without fries and the soda too.

All hope for fast food is not lost though Subway removed the yoga mat ingredient from their bread after public outcry. The more we make this information public the better chances we have that these companies will listen and remove these chemicals from the food.

Thanks for the enlightenment @wakeupnd, ignorance they say is a disease. And it's obvious that there are many out there who are ignorant of this fact just like I was. But I'm grateful that I know this now and I wish everyone would see this as well.

Really informative post mate ! One more sub !

But at the end of the story, their is sugar everywhere, in every industrial product and every year 2.8 million people die from obesity which is caused mainly by sugar and junk food. So I'll check Phthalates but I guess we should fight sugar and industrialised products (negative impacts of centralisation and greed).

French fries will kill us all ;) Or capitalism, or just ourself who knows !

yup, processed sugar is another hidden chemical in our food.

Or just don't support these fast food giants with your money to begin with. Everything they offer is non-food regardless.

Great article i should follow my diet more seriously now :D
