Following the thoroughly enjoyable Gavin and Stacey XMAS special, which was a nice send off with a happy ending I couldn't resist going back and having a look at the three original series.
It's amazing how dated they are now, and I found myself getting a little nostalgic for the mid 2000s, which is a funny kind of period to get nostalgic about!
The fictional characters Gavin and Stacey were born in 1979 and 1981 respectively, making them just a bit younger than me, but still within range for me to be able to relate to their life-histories.
Anyways looking back a few observations....it aired originally between 2007 to 2010...
Getting WASTED = GOOD TIMES!
I was amazed at how integral not just alcohol was, but getting blasted was to the whole plot line, all the way through from start to finish....
I mean it's integral to the four main characters getting it on in episode one and then right up to the final episode the family is all together in Pam and Mick's house getting BLASTED!
Smoking in pubs....
That was a thing early on, in the first series, they could smoke in pubs, but only REALLY EARLY, the ban came into place in 2007, then they are smoking outside from there on.
Tech history...
This is mainly through the character Bryn, being slightly behind
- His Sat Nav chenanigans in series one are hilarious.
- He's on 'The YouTube' in serious 2 - 2009.
- Social Media connectivity runs all the way through series 2 and 3 - with people hearing things on Facebook first rather than F2F, that's part of the comedy.
It's pre the 2010 equality act....
The Welsh are pretty much the subject of ridicule
At one point there are comments about whether they're talking about 'Lesbian Gay or 'Gay, Gay'.
I think there's one black person in the whole series, referred to as 'The Black fella...'

Old people extreme stereotypes...
There are TWO old people, Dorris, a great character, but sorry an 'energetic youthful' old stereotype.
And then Pete's mother who is utterly decrepid - they forget she's there and leave her on the sofa all night.
Music...
They do love a sing song, which shapes the whole affair.
John Prescot!
One of the best comedy moments in British TV history when John Prescott turns up at Nessa and David's wedding, having been a previous lover of Nessa's and 'taken the breakup very badly'.
Fun Fact - Gavin and Stacey remains JP's only fictional TV credit.

I never watched it. I am fairly picky about what comedy I watch and I'm not a big fan of James Corden. It does seem that I am in a minority though. I had no idea that Prescott was in it.
I loved it! But it's aged now... He's back in Britain now you know!
Gavin and Stacey seems to be more than just a comedy, it’s a window into a completely different time, with its small details reflecting the cultural and technological changes we’ve gone through since the 2000s.
It’s amazing how some things seem so outdated today, like smoking in bars or using terms that are no longer socially acceptable.
