Guess what profession is most needed in the present and future? In Kompas article, Wednesday (3/2/2016), explained that Indonesia is currently in need of a lot of manpower in the field of science and engineering due to the government's development focus on infrastructure.
However, unfortunately this republic lacks expertise in the field. That happens because now many students are less interested in science and technology courses or exact sciences. They prefer to go to social programs in college.
This condition is justified by the Chairman of the Board of Foundation of Technology Development Indonesia (YPTI) Marzan Aziz Iskandar. According to him when compared with other countries in the ASEAN region and Asia, the number of science and engineering students in Indonesia is the fewest.
"Of all the students in Indonesia, only 15 percent are studying in science and engineering, compared with Malaysia which reached 24 percent, Korea 33 percent and China 38 percent," Marzan told Kompas on Friday (3/3/2016) .
The low interest of the youth towards the department is also evident from the release of the Higher Education Database of Kemristek and Dikti in March 2016. The data mentioned, there are more than 5 million students, but only about 1.5 million of them are majoring in science-engineering and the rest take the social-humanities field.
Well, it could be one reason young people are less interested in science and engineering majors to avoid subjects counts, such as mathematics, physics, chemistry and the like. It is common knowledge that the subject is a frightening specter for Indonesian children from elementary school to high school.
Therefore, it is not surprising that many high school graduates who avoid admission to existing courses of study subjects while going to continue their education to college.
The fact is obviously very unfortunate, because industry trends require a competent workforce in the field of science diteknologi not only occur in Indonesia, but already worldwide.
The results of a study by the United States federal agency for the development of science, the National Science Foundation (NSF) in 2011 said, in the next decade 80 percent of jobs require human resources (HR) with the competence of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
Then a survey of the Social Market Foundation for EDF Energy (a British energy company). The study, published in January 2017, states that the need for UK workforce in science, technology, research and technicians will double from the year 2016-2023.
The increase will then spawn 140,000 new jobs and 640,000 jobs over the next six years in the sector. The increase in the number of human resource needs is not separated from technological innovation and infrastructure investments that continue to stretch.
Technology that changed the learning paradigm
Reflecting on the trend of human and domestic HR needs, Indonesian children should be able to capture that need as a great opportunity for success. However, in order to achieve it, they must first be friends with subjects related to the field, such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, and even coding.
The difficult stigma to learn some of these subjects is not entirely true. It all depends on how the learning method is used, whether it is easy and fun or vice versa.
Especially in modern times like today. The age when information technology, in form and the internet, has managed to facilitate the activities of many people including children.
They not only use the device as communication and entertainment, but also to satisfy the curiosity and learning desire for something. This condition then makes them become familiar with plus internet gadgets compared with textbooks.
One of the learning programs that have implemented it is in Samsung Smart Learning Class (SSLC). Here, through tablets students can learn math, science, coding, and more with more fun and interactive.
Classes are also connected to the Internet so that students can gain wider access to science. So when it comes to difficulties or finding problems in a lesson, they can search for themselves with independent research. Meanwhile, teachers play an important role in assisting students in using technology so as not to blame.
With KBN as it is expected mathematics and science is no longer a dreaded subject that will even be popular with students. It is also one of the ways that the interest of young people to study in science and technology or engineering courses will increase.
As a result the story of Indonesia lack of competent human resources in these two sectors can be resolved immediately.
