Mexican digging tunnel 32 years into nowhere (4 photos)

Somewhere in the Mojave Desert in the El Paso area, there is a strange tunnel passing through 2,087 meters of hard rock. Strangely, this tunnel does not lead to anything special. There is only one reason: an eccentric man named William Henry "Donkey" Schmidt (also known as a "mole man") really wanted the tunnel to appear there.

Although he spent 32 years of his life, alone punching through a tunnel through a solid rock, he never told anyone about it. Answering a question about his strange undertaking, he said that it was "the shortest way". Nobody knows where.

Most people living in this area believe that this person was just crazy. He lived alone, and had the reputation of a miser, as he patched his clothes with sackcloth, and he repaired boots with tin from cans. Many times he was seriously wounded as a result of his own explosions, as he was too frugal to use a long fuse.

There was a time when the local called him "Eccentric Schmidt", and later he himself took the name "Burro" (English Donkey). To this day, the Oslika-Schmidt tunnel is a great mystery, and he continues to arouse the curiosity of those who decided to visit him. Everyone who has been there is ready to vouch for what Schmidt knew what he was doing. He had no special knowledge for such work, but the accuracy of his work is beyond doubt. Nevertheless, the question remains: why do anyone even need to dig a tunnel to nowhere?
When a person fanatically performs some seemingly meaningless task, this naturally causes a huge number of questions. When Schmidt was digging, there were rumors of rich ore deposits and of the gold vein that he allegedly developed in the tunnel. But none of these versions was confirmed. Several people investigated the land of Schmidt and his work, but alas, he did not leave a single record of the reasons for his actions.
