The Upside of Eliminating Online Anonymity

There are obvious benefits to online anonymity. After all, I am doing it myself. Being anon allows dissidents to speak truth to power online without that “power” attacking them back IRL. But there is also great power in anonymity for the powers that be.

under their actual name.If online anon accounts were banned on Twitter, for instance, that could and should also apply to corporations, NGOs, and government institutions. No longer could KFC or the US Navy tweet via @KFC or @Navy. Every tweet from a corporation and government organization must come from an employee from that organization,

really behind those sentiments? We will never know. With no anon accounts allowed, such a tweet would have to be sent by a specific employee at Target or the CIA.No longer could a corporation tweet something and the public have no idea who was actually saying it. As it stands now, Target and the CIA can tweet woke propaganda under @Target and @CIA. But who is

The anonymity provided by an organizational social media account gives the organization plausible deniability. If @BudLight tweets something ultra-woke and objectionable to their customer base, the executives of the company can say, “That was just a rogue intern who tweeted that,” despite those execs secretly supporting the woke cause all along.

Without anon accounts for corporations or government organizations, there would be no nameless account for all members to hide behind. If they want to tweet a propagandistic message, they will have to do so under their own names. Then the public can direct their backlash at that individual, which will likely deter them from being so overtly woke on social media in the first place—or political at all. Ending online anonymity for corporations could help defeat woke capital.

I don’t know if that would be worth it. The benefits of online anonymity may still be greater for dissidents, at least at this point in time. But eliminating online anonymity would not only hurt dissidents. There could be an upside to removing all avatars.
