Introducing Music to Kids

"Teaching music for children should be done in a fun way Playing while Learning Music is the most effective method"

The number of schools or music courses in Indonesia these days is very interesting. The realization that music has many benefits for life makes parents less reluctant to encourage their son to learn music. Unfortunately many parents have not realized that learning music should be gradual.

Often without giving a choice, parents immediately enter their children into piano, guitar or vocal classes. Children who really want to go to drum classes are so lazy to practice and always think to throw away. In the end learning music becomes an annoying activity, wasting time and money. Vain. If such a goal the parents will not be achieved and the potential of children's music is impossible to be honed. This situation needs to be changed.

How to teach children to music? The answer: through a gradual process. Learn music gradually and follow formal education (school), starting from the playground then to the next level (level).
In teaching music, the first thing to do is introduce music. Usually after going through the stage of recognition, children do not need to be forced to learn music.

Introducing Music to Kids

How to recognize music

Knowing music is an early stage to do before children learn to play a musical instrument or learn to sing. Very important because the goal is to invite children to love music and hone their musical sensitivity.
Love the music
Why love music? Do not know, then do not love. If we like (music) we will be more open to receive and learn more about all things related to music. In addition, someone who knows music and then plays music will realize that music is very beneficial to their lives.

Sharpen the Musical Intellect

Age 2 years is the right age, because at this age the brain nerve to learn music has matured. Music consisting of 5 main elements - tone, rhythm, notation, melody and harmony - can sharpen children's musical sensitivity through play activities. Therefore, playing music while learning is the most effective method of introducing and teaching music to children. Parents and music teachers can create games that contain chants and dances (movement). Playing and exploring sounds with simple percussion devices - such as tambourine, castanet, maracas, jimbe, triangle - can also be part of a fun learning activity.

Introducing music from an early age and training the sensitivity of music is not just aiming to print children into musicians. Music can help children express themselves better, train their sensitivity to art (especially music) and the environment, improve brain intelligence, mind power, creativity, health and trust in public (in front of class and on stage).
Don Campbell is an educator, music researcher and founder of Insitute of Music, Health and Education reveals that in many of his studies has shown that:

  • Young children who get regular music training show their motor skills, math skills, and reading skills better than their friends who do not practice music.
  • High school students who sing or play musical instruments have higher test scores than those who do not have that hobby.
  • The brains of the adult musicians generally show larger brain waves (EEG = Electro Encephalogram) than those who are not musicians, and even have different anatomies when practicing music before the age of 7 years.

Music for Children with Special Needs

Music for Children with Special Needs
"Every child has the right to learn music, including Children with Special Needs, such as Children with Down Syndrome, Slow Learner, and Autism" Children with Special Needs just like children in general, show the same reaction to music physically, senses and emotions. Train the Musical sensitivity of Children with Special Needs, can help them become more independent, improve motor control, improve language and speak, control emotions and make it easier for them to interact and communicate with others. Music is a good therapy tool for Children with Special Needs.
