Hello fellow Steemit writers! My name is Katie, and I am brand new to the site and looking forward to getting some articles written!
I have always been passionate about writing and the English language in general. So passionate, in fact, that I decided to compromise my sanity by teaching middle school English in California. Any time I share this bit of information, I get a very sympathetic “Oh, Jesus why would you do that to yourself?” For the most part, I understand that response. Middle schoolers are tough, but I absolutely love what I do. Part of the reason I love it is the fact that I absolutely hated middle school. This might sound counter-intuitive, but it’s important for me to know that I am helping these kids get through what is probably the worst three years of their schooling career.
Teaching English brought me here. I’ve always wanted to do freelance writing and every year, I try to take on something new so I don’t feel like my life has become a monotonous Groundhog Day-like existence. Being a teacher can drive you nuts, and having a creative outlet like this is exactly the kind of thing that can keep me sane.
I hope to post some humorous articles about my experiences in the classroom and life in general. On a more serious note, I want to discuss the serious topic of brain health. I was diagnosed with epilepsy at age 15, and it has been a struggle to deal with this ever since the initial diagnosis. The sad thing is there are people out there like me who are dealing with this illness and don’t know what to do. Even worse, many feel ashamed of this illness. I hope to bring attention to the subject for anyone who feels alone in an illness that makes them feel broken.
I’d love to get some tips for how to be successful on Steemit from some of you fellow writers. I can’t wait to read your brilliant articles, and I hope you enjoy mine!
