Introduction and Verification - Mark Yarbrough - life in the slow lane

in #introduceyourself8 years ago (edited)

Hi Steemit, it's great to be a part of this new and growing online platform.

So by way of introduction, here's a bit about me. I had been an Industrial Controls Technician for a good number of years before going into Tech Support. I have worked for companies like Whirlpool, Bosch, Apple and Dell.

The work I have done has often been difficult but also rewarding and challenging. Work history out of the way, I can say something about my current personal interests...

I have always had an interest in science and tech, and even though technology is not gonna save the world, it can certainly make life more fun and interesting. What will save the world is a lessening of focus on profit and more of a focus on people. As E. F. Schumaker, author of "Small is Beautiful" said - "economics as if people mattered". Why wouldn't that be so? That's as far as I want to get into politics in this introductory post, suffice it to say I don't fit easily into conventional political categories - I am conservative in some ways, liberal in others, with a strong sprinkling of libertarian principles. I believe in local government and local, autonomous economies where everyone has a share of both the responsibilities and profits.

One of my goals on Steemit will be to participate in the popular discourse here, and at times, bring up some little discussed, but interesting bits and pieces that one finds if one looks at life with curiosity and a bit of wonder. Here's a small example. I installed a reverse osmosis water filter in my home a couple of years back and noticed soon after that I had "ice spikes" growing out of the ice cube trays in my refrigerator...

Rather wicked looking don't you think?

I posted about this on my blog: Help - Ice Spikes are Invading My Ice Cube Trays!

There's a little-know property of water, and the way it freezes that causes this, and if you are wondering why you don't see these critters in your ice cube trays at home, it's because this only occurs in very pure water. and then only occasionally, driven by a number of parameters that need to be coincidentally in place. This is an example of what I want to share - little known, but interesting tidbits about life and the world around us.

Anyway, I hope Steemit will also be a learning platform for me, and I guess I'll start right now by asking why is there a wavy symbol or icon in the pictures I posted in this first post that looks sort of like a half moustache? I am not even going to try to fix this right now, maybe they won't show up in the posted article, but if they do, perhaps someone can help me with posting photos here, lol.

At any rate, let's all keep our eyes open to all the interesting stuff out there...
