The big question once again arises, is Rio 2016 safe for athletes. The games slotted to commence on August 5 is under scanner since day one, the authorities have been under pressure as Rio preparations for the games is scrambling to finish.
There have been few incidents one after the other first, a fire broke out in the basement car park of the Olympic Village apartments where Australian athletes had taken shelter. More than 100 athletes were evacuated. Secondly, due to lack of proper security, Australian athletes also had their properties stolen during the evacuation.
In an another incident, the main ramp of Marina da Gloria which is the venue for boat sailing has partially collapsed. This raises few questions about the quality of construction at Rio, Philip Wilkinson, a spokesman for the Rio 2016 organizing committee, said high tide and storms were to blame for the damage.
The buildup to Rio 2016 has been beset by political, economic and health crises. The organizers at Rio can only hope to put all the problems behind when the opening Ceremony takes place at the Maracana Stadium. More than 1000 athletes have arrived from 151 countries to participate in different competitions. With few days to go, hope all turns out to be good especially for the people of Brazil who has worked hard day night for this day.
Steem rocks !
